Yggdrasil now in three flavors
I'm surprised no one's posted on this subforum about this news yet... what happened to all the Schiit enthusiasts?
https://darko.audio/2021/09/schiit-a...ggdrasil-dacs/ So, partly in response to supply shortages for parts going into the original Analog 2 board (now branded the "OG"), Schiit had devised a number of Yggdrasil variations comprised of different components and design strategies. From that effort, they decided to bring to market three different "flavors" of the Yggy: the unchanged "OG" version ($2599); the "Less is More" LIM version which uses 16-bit TI DAC chips ($2199); and the "More is Less" MIL version which uses 20-bit TI DAC chips ($2349). The specific details are in the Darko link above. You can also send in your current Yggy to be upgraded to any one of these three flavors: LIM $450 // MIL $550 // OG $750. As I understand it, the new versions are named as such because the overall impression from Schiit's internal testing was that the cheaper, 16-bit chips somehow resulted in higher quality sound than the more detailed 20-bit chips. Or, less bits = better music, hence "less is more" and vice versa. Anyone thinking about jumping on the Schiit train in light of the new Yggy versions? I've actually taken the plunge and have ordered an upgrade from my trusty Analog 1 Yggy to "Less is More", alongside an upgrade to Unison USB since the USB stage died on me last year. I kept putting off sending it in for service since I also intended to do the Analog 2 upgrade on the same shipping trip, and a couple weeks ago I very nearly ordered that service but hesitated. So, last week when they announced LIM and MIL, I took it as a sign, went with my gut and got in queue for LIM. I'm super excited for my Yggy to come back all new 'n' improved, so I hope I'm not in for a terribly long wait. [UPDATE] And wouldn't ya know it, I got the email from Schiit this afternoon giving me the go-ahead to ship my Yggy on over with an RMA number. I just might be burning in the new upgrades by the end of the month Last edited by saru; 09-14-2021 at 05:12 PM. Reason: Typo fix, and update |

Let us know how it sounds when you get it back. I used a Gungnir MB with Gen 5 USB for a number of years, but sold it just recently.

In the thread where I was asking about SACD players with digital inputs and talked about downsizing my digital rig, I actually had looked at going all the way down to the Schiit Modi as it's been highly regarded, especially for $100. We have to be at or reaching the law of diminishing returns for DAC upgrades at this point, especially for 16/44 audio. I like that they do have a range of products for varying budgets, but the only product I have from them is the SYS so I can't really say much beyond that. I'd be interested to hear what you think after the upgrade.

I Used a Gungnir Multibit 5's in home theater, and main system for a few years with great results.
Just got a Less is More Yiggy yesterday, and it is breaking in. Totally blows away the Gumby! Right out of the box. Highly detailed extended high frequencies, warm midrange, and very deep bass. I never thought any DAC could sound so great! The Gumby took 4 weeks to settle down and sound it's best. I expect the LIM YGGY will sound even better with time also. I will post more after 2 weeks continuously powered up. Last edited by 6dj8; 09-25-2021 at 02:46 PM. |

Put it on some good isolation footers if you can. I found that A/V Roomservice's EVPs worked very, very well with my Gungnir MB. Better than Stillpoints. Though, Stillpoints work better under my SOtM SMS-200 UltraNeo network bridge. Looking forward to your impressions once it settles and burns in.

My LIM-flavored Yggdrasil has made its way back across the country from the good folks at Schiit and I've already swapped it back into its rightful place in my main system. I assume it still takes the recommended 2-3 weeks of continuous play to properly settle in, so I'll hold off on any focused listening for a while. That said, even with just-powered-on, casual listening, it certainly sounds nice!

After using the Less is More YGGY for two weeks, and listening every day, there is no further big improvement after being on 2 days, unlike the Gumby, and all the reviews of other Schiit products. No more long break-in, which is an improvement.
I listened through Stax L700 ear speakers, with a STAX SRM 006tS Driver amp, and NOS RCA clear top tubes, from a MacBook Pro streaming Amazon Hi Def music. The details are out of this world.......even better than CD/SACD through my Sony SCD5400ES player. Very natural sound, from the very low bass, through warm midrange, and extended high frequencies. I was shocked that digital sound was this good! The Less is More YGGY is destined to be a Classic IMO. Five stars for sound quality! I will try the YGGY in my main speaker system next, and I expect similar results! Last edited by 6dj8; 10-09-2021 at 07:29 PM. |

Further thoughts on Less is more in main system
My System
SCD 5400 ES optical out into Yggy Pass labs X1, XA60.5 into Magnepan 3.6R Also streaming Amazon High Rez from 2015 MacBook Pro Similar results to the Stax Ear Speakers. VERY clear, 3D, deep soundstage, extended high frequencies, warm midrange, deep bass. Even CD layer from SACDs sound great....hard to tell from the SACD layer. Extremely clear, with all the audiophile goodness anyone would want. Best digital playback I ever heard! Could not be more pleased! Five Star sound quality.
