Default Lumin D3 announced today...

This just in from Lumin:

The new Lumin D3 was announced today...
https://www.luminmusic.com/lumin-d3.html

Key new features:
D3 compared to D2:
- New analog output stage originated from T3
- New processor from T3
- Upgrade to ES9028PRO DAC from WM8741 DAC (the ES9028PRO DAC PRO-class DAC beats all the mobile-class ES9039Q2M, ES9038Q2M, ES9028Q2M, ES9028K2M, ES9069, ES9068AS, ES9018*, ES9016*, etc.)
- Supports Tidal Connect
- Upgrade from maximum DSD128 to maximum DSD256
- Upgrade from DSD64 resampling to DSD256 resampling
- AirPlay2 compatible
- New finishing comparable to the T3 and P1

D3 compared to T3:
- D3 is a cost reduced version of T3
- Single ES9028PRO DAC chip in D3 instead of Dual ES9028PRO DAC chips in T3
- Maximum DSD256 in D3 instead of maximum DSD512 in T3
- No USB audio output (to external USB DAC) in D3 but supported with T3
- When using non-zero analog balance adjustment, Leedh Processing Volume is disabled (no such restriction in T3)
- Smaller cabinet dimension

Shot of the rear panel. Also continues Lumin's best practices of installing a dedicated chassis ground terminal.

Also available in silver

Looks like a significant upgrade from the D2. What is the MSRP?

I don't know...I've been trying to find out, as well. When I do, I'll update here.

Hey Stephen - looks like a great product.
If you use the Lumin as the DAC/Streamer with the on-board (LEEDH) volume control -

does the app volume control (say Roon or Tidal connect) work directly with the LEEDH system or do you have to use the Lumin app (I don't see anything like a Lumin remote??)

Hey, Chris,

In short, Yes. It's "context-dependent" or "use-case" dependent, though.

Here's what I mean: with my personal set-up using the P1 as my streamer/DAC, I set the Constellation Inspiration integrated to Unity Gain (0 on the front panel), and then adjust the actual playback output volume using LEEDH, either using the P1's remote or when I am in Roon, you can also use the "volume slider" at the lower right of the Roon playback interface (so, in this application, the P1 functions as my preamp, as well).

On a side-note: even when I am playing LPs and using my EAR324 phono stage, I still connect to the P1, where it functions solely as a preamplifier (again with the Inspiration integrated set to Unity Gain). I'm now of the view that LEEDH is the best volume control "methodology" I've personally ever heard.

If you're using the U2, though, the playback volume adjustment is "disabled" in both Roon and in the Lumin app, so you have to use the preamp or integrated to set output volume.

Hope that answers your question.

While I can't speak to how the new D3 sounds, I think the U2 is a great product. It's not even 1/4 of the way to being fully burned in and I am already very impressed with it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers, my friend.

Thanks Stephen for the detailed reply. Going to have look at Lumin more carefully.
The Linn Klimax does something similar (at a slightly higher price-point ) for their phono input - an A/D conversion, RIAA equalization in the digital domain (so perfect in that sense), digital volume control, then back to analog.
Purists might cringe, but this approach can yield stunning results.

Hi Chris,
Yes, I agree.

Also, I don't concern myself with what "purists" might think. Getting into that is like getting into a discussion with theoretical physcists for a particle in the Standard Model that mediates Gravity (graviton...yeah, right! ).

I just go with empirical data, i.e., what my ears (and brain! ) tell me. Cheers.
