The Sibelius today--a knockout performance with detailed, transparent sound.

Turn out the lights. Welcome to Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8: the battle for Stalingrad rages in 1943. You gnaw on a rat bone while a sponge soaked in the astringency of despair sucks hope from your soul.

Disney was going to use this in their ads for Bambi, but it never did very well in focus groups so they went a different direction.

Default Richard Strauss: Tone Poems

Here is more new music...

Strauss, R:
Symphonia Domestica, Op. 53
Metamorphosen
SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, François-Xavier Roth

Saw this highlighted in Gramophone (April 2017) and decided to try it. The reviewer mentioned the "outstanding quality of the recorded sound" helping project these scores with "astonishing clarity". I agree so this is a worthy addition to my music library.

Op. 59 No.2 and 3 today. On balance, if one were to own just one set (gasp...), then this might be the one.

I read about this disc in the December issue of Gramophone. Definitely agree that the performances burst with enthusiasm - two violin titans having fun with excellent music. A fun disc to listen to. The recording is natural, but I wish it had more bite.
Playing this first thing this morning. Can't think of a better way to get the day going.

Wow. What an excellent, creepy description of this music.
