Everyone,
Thank you for the recommendations! I'll put them on my Amazon list!
A few weekends ago, my wife and I flew up to Boston and enjoyed Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Boston Symphony, among other things, for Tchaicovsky's Violin Concerto! I have a really nice setup at home, but listening to the live orchestra in that fantastic hall in Boston, I must admit that the sound quality of that live performance was just better!

I do have an SACD player. Any recommendations on some classical SACDs I should add to my collection, excellent performances and excellent sound quality?

Hi, this is a terrific set if you like Shostakovich:

Default What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?

Franck: Violin Sonata
Brahms: Horn Trio

Itzhak Perlman, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Barry Tuckwell
Decca (1969), 16/44 remaster

Both of these are beautiful pieces of music, and the performances and sound on this pairing are excellent.

Listening to disc 2 of 3-disc set (Paris Symphonies)...

Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 84, 85
Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Concentus Musicus Wein

Vivacious, energetic symphonies from Haydn. The interpretations from Harnoncourt are punchy with prominent brass touches. The recorded sound is excellent.

True, but this is only half the set. If one comes across the 1991 Philips Silver Line 4 CD set of all 12, do not hesitate. Sir Davis and RCO are superb.

Listening to . . . . . Heinz Holliger - Concerti Per Oboe
Albinoni, Marcello, Cimarosa, Samartini, Lotti
I Musici

The sound of a well played and well recorded oboe is, to me, not far from reaching the quintessential and the epitome of recorded sound and Heinz Holliger may well be the finest purveyor of this heavenly modality.

And, this recording is a most listenable, nay, say, a truly gorgeous example of the oboe art.

In other words, this one is damn good.
