The problem with this is you inherently change the sound of the root file with the D/A to A/D conversion.
Also, it isn't necessarily the copy protection SOFTWARE (or algorythm) but rather a hardware issue. The discs are pressed differently in which a built-in pseudo-dongle is on every disc with only a SACD-ROM is able to read; unfortunately, no ROM's have ever been released to the consumer market. That was the one thing they did right to prevent high resolution duplication, but it also destroyed the format with such totalitarian software protection measures. If it was an open format, I would easily say that the SACD could have replaced the CD years ago.

As you said it was the prefect Copy Protection, but that perfection killed the product.

Basically there is a hardcoded portion of the disc that is only readable by a SACD-ROM that says "ok you can play me as a SACD."
It is a piece of code, but requires a very specific piece of hardware to actually read it. Hence why I said pseudo-dongle and not traditional dongle.

I have a Denon Professional CDR with balanced XLR in. I may try recording "Johnny Cash Live at Folsom Prison" (SACD only) from my Sony SCD-1 via balanced XLR out to Denon.

That is easy enough to do - you are doing a D/A to A/D deal.

What about the idea of SACD from analog output to a A/D converter in 24/192 to CD-R? I know it's not "ripping", but would I sound better than 16/44.1 CD layer?

Doesn't Oppo offer an SACD to PCM digital output?

I believe that was a mod/hack.

Yes, that is the only way to rip it, and you can maintain a 88/24 that way.
One day we'll be able to get some coders on it, hopefully!
