I remember seeing Dennis talking at a dealer in norther VA decades ago. He claimed that he could pull the 211 out of the Cary 805 while it was playing and there wouldn't be any consequences. He goes to great lengths to protect the amps from us!

Not sure why my previous post asking about using the 7af7 didn't show up. In any case for the record you can use the 7af7 in the Firebottle Kt88 with an adapter. I don't think it sounds very good though. Sounded grainy, veiled, and rolled off. Pretty sure all of them were made by Sylvania so I doubt it matters which brand you buy.

Just popped in some cv124 tubes Ferranti tubes. I'm in love... Big, warm, lots of color. Anyone else using 807 tubes? These sound amazing, had some Russian ones from the 80s I think and they sounded terrible. Think I'm going to get some old RCA, Sylvania, etc. and give them a try.
Anyone use 6bg6? Seems like there are a ton of variations. |

Hmm, been reading that the 807 can’t handle as much voltage on the screen as the 6l6c. What voltage are the screens set at on the kt88 firebottle?

Haven't tried any 807 or 6BG6, have read that the 6BG6 is almost identical to a 6L6GB. I have tried 6L6GB in a couple of my Inspire amps and they gave a very pleasant, warm'ish sound. Less high frequency detail and smaller soundstage, nice on vocals & midrange.

I saw someone in this thread having trouble with some Mullard 807 tubes but he was using a 5ar4. I'm using a 5u4g so I'm hoping all will be well. Certainly haven't heard any problems yet.

Voltage questions when changing rectifiers
Straightwire, I think I read that the input tube's voltages don't really change as the rectifier changes because of regulation. I am curious what voltage those tubes get. I know that a variety of tubes work in that position but surely some will be more closely matched to the supplied voltage than others, right?
Do the output tubes see specific voltages on both the screen and plate for each rectifier? In other words, if we put in a 5ar4 we will get x on the plate and y on the screen but when we put in a 5u4 we get .8x and .8y? If so, I'm curious what x and y are. I ask because the chart Dennis sent me is a little confusing. It shows that we can use either a 5ar4 or a 5u4 for the 6l6. Was he assuming that we were using a modern 6l6, which are all 6l6c or can we really use a 5ar4 with old 6l6a? He also listed a 606c tube in the same category as the 6f6 and 6v6 for power. I can't find any info about that tube, I assume it's a typo. Thanks for any info you can share along these lines! |
