A question regarding the stacking of amps

Hello;

I was wondering if anyone is stacking two or more amps on top of each other without using a rack with shelves to separate them? If so are you ever concerned about heat issues, proper ventilation, etc.? So basically say a 4B sitting directly on top of another 4B, two 7B's, 28's, a 4B on a 6B, or even say a BIT on top of an amp or the other way around?

The reason I ask is because I'm going to be adding a couple additional amps in the near future and don't have room in my rack for them. Since my interconnects are so short they would have to be really close to the rack so I was thinking of just sitting them on the floor in front of the rack but since space is also really limited there as well I would have to put one on top of the other.

I would not stack Bryston amps, they run hot when you wind them out and their manuals make mention of giving them enough space to breathe.

Should allow about 1-2 inches of air space in between them if stacked. Usually the 4 feet on the bottom of each amp is sufficient but if run hard more is better. The heatsinks are designed to act as a chimney so air flow moves up and away through convection. (As an aside we have found that the space between the fins on the heatsink is critical to allow maximum airflow between the fins. So the heat dissipation over the fins on the newer amplifiers has actually increased by about 15% over the older style heatsinks).

There are thermal sensors on the heatsinks of the amplifiers so if they ever get too hot they will shut down and restart when cooler.

I live in an apartment so can't crank up the volume to loud. I don't have much space between my 6B and the shelf above and the lower 4B and the shelf above now in my rack and everything has always run fine. So in the picture below the additional two amps would more or less be placed where the Xbox and PlayStation are now, at least that's what logistics are dictating for the immediate future.

Thanks Ivan, yeah you don't have much room above either. Definitely more then I have now for my 6B and 4B. It's hard to tell from the angle, looks like maybe 2" to 3" tops?

I stacked 2 pairs of Bryston 7B ST's on single Zoethecus amp stands since I was short two, and it worked very nicely. I couldn't really notice the difference when I got more stands. I have not tried this with other brands.
