I needed about 75 hours on mine for it to finally (???) settle in. It started out on the dark side, got darker, then the highs opened up. Not as nice/smooth sounding as the EAT, but at 1/7th the cost the Matsushita is a great sounding tube.

EAT is smooth-smooth-smooth in the mids and highs, while the Mat has a "slight" hardness in some of the upper range. Mat has better (or a little accentuated?) upper bass-lower mid, and for someone with Stats this area is always troublesome - the Mat will work nicely there and will help with Sub/Panel integration.

I find the upper registers to sound more from behind speaker plane with the Mat and the EAT more equal or in front of speaker plane. Right now I do not believe the highs are rolled off on the Mat, just less forward sounding than the EAT. But the EAT is not bright, edgy, etc.

Tried a few Damper's on the Mat, and I found I prefer the EAT Damper over Herbie's, Orange O-Ring (CJ), or Black O-Ring (ARC).

But like anything in this hobby, this is the result from my rig in my room with my ears....YMMV.

ronenash - Will be interesting to see how it plays out in your setup.

I have done a fair amount of tube rolling in my Premier 16 and have yet to find a NOS tube that I didn't like! The Tungsram and NOS Tesla (not JJ) varieties sound very good and are still available at a reasonable price. The Tungsram's sound a bit like Siemens tubes in that they are very clear and transparent while maintaining sweetness. The Tesla's sound like Telefunkens, with a fuller, more romantic sound (sampling fine tubes is like tasting wine!). If you go the Tesla route try to find ones with factory code 32 printed on the glass. These are from the Tesla Rožnov or Vrchlabí factories which produced the best sounding varieties.

I have recently tried my first NOS tube the Matsushuta 7DJ8 and it is great. Slightly better than my previous favorate the Gold Lion 6922.

I have tried many types in my Audio Research Ref Pre, the Us Made Amperex 7308 is heads above the rest, IMO...

Go for NOS tubes from Telefunken, Siemens, or Philips. They have different characters but all are worth a try. My preferred ones in the entry stage of my Copland are the Philips ECC188, hard to find, expensive but...completely satisfying

I have several drawers full of tubes. My favorite 6DJ8/6922/7308 are the Amperex USN-CEP 7308 Gold Pins.

Of course, the circuit design and how the tube is implemented, makes a huge difference in how a tube will sound.
