Missa solemnis
Currently spinning the Klemperer recording of Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis" - perhaps my favorite piece of all time.
Klemperer's majestic reading of the score, fabulous soloists, ravishing and lush orchestral playing seamlessly brings together Beethoven's problematic score and finally makes sense of the piece in a way that few conductors can - or do. The only recording I've heard to rival it is George Szell's miraculous love performance from 1967 which is marred by poor sound quality and intonation issues. It's a recording that I love and treasure as well, but not one that I would recommend for those of you wanting to hear a clean performance. |

Concerto Köln
After exploring some of Evaristo Dall'Abaco's music in an earlier post, I found this 6-disc box set featuring less well-known composers spanning the 17th and 18th centuries.
Concerto Köln play the Music of Dall'Abaco, Locatelli, Vanhal, Kozeluch and Eberl A bargain at $18.75 for 6 discs. Stating off with disc 1 which features concerti by Dall'Abaco. Vigorous playing by the conductorless Concerto Köln. The recorded sound on this disc is natural but I wished It had more bite. |
