After revising the initial proposal, I've gotten the cost down to around $6,500. I will be ordering the acoustical treatments this coming week. I have been assured by my dealer, this will be money well spent.

You could hire an acoustician and treat your room for way less than $10K.
Look at RPG. http://www.rpginc.com/ Read Floyd Toole's book, "Sound Reproduction: Loudspeakers and Rooms". You need less room treatment than you might think, especially if you have speakers with good dispersion and smooth, linear off axis response. That said, a 12x12 room will have significant problems. Hope you don't have a 12' ceiling. Look at a room mode calculator to see what frequencies will be emphasized. Is your dealer doing any measurements to show before and after analysis? Small room acoustics is a science and just throwing stuff on the walls (and ceiling) does not guarantee good results. I treated a 16W x 23L x 10H home theater for about 1/2 what you are spending (just the absorption and diffusion panels, not including what I paid an acoustician to design the room and treatment). Draw your room to scale and send the information to GIK or RPG and see what you get back from them. Assuming you're not hiring a designer, they'll be as good as anybody in estimating a package for your room. $6500 for materials sounds like a lot for such a small space. By way of example, I'll be treating my 3300 CF room for about $1000 using primarily GIK's products. It's more important that you get the product where it needs to be than who actually makes the product as long as you're dealing with a reputable manufacturer and products of like type. |

Vicoustic also makes fine products, some of which are beautiful as well. I agree with the suggestion to go slowly. The general way I go about things is to treat slap echo, first reflections on the sidewalls, and introduce some bass trapping. Evaluate and add refinements from there. A Dayton OmniMic2 for < $300 can tell you a lot about room response. Acoustic treatment, especially in a difficult room, may seem costly at first, but it can be the most cost-effective audio improvement you'll make. Good luck! |

Installed my ASC treatments this week. Wow! The difference in clarity and detail is amazing.

Congratulations, @Amadave! What many don't realize beforehand is exactly what you noticed: that system articulation (clarity and detail) benefit tremendously when you treat the room. It's not just the bass that improves!
