From my beloved Shostakovich box set - always in rotation, but lately with my new streamer a bit less so - this gripping 13th.

Wow, the 3 added channels do offer a lot more "being there"!
I'm looking forward to the multichannel update of my streamer.

If you're new to Ries, he lands pretty squarely in the early-romantic era compositionally. These are full-bodied symphonies and very "drinkable", I might even go as far as "intoxicating", at least on occasion.

You clearly hear the influence of Beethoven in these 2 symphonies.
And that is understandable, because Ries was Beethoven's student and secretary for 3 years.
You also hear some influences of Schubert.
They're highly enjoyable, these works, but do not reach the status of masterpiece like most works from his examples mentioned above.
The SACD offers decent sound.

Listening again to these symphonies.
I'd like to change my comment regarding SQ: it is very decent.

PS. Todd, we miss you here!

Underappreciated but one of my favorite sets, too. Rip it to a streamer and enjoy it more!

Kal, I might do it in the future, but for now, I don't have the time (courage? material?) to do it.
I let my Oppo 203 do the multichannel work.

By the way, I'm looking at the exaSound e38 MarkII, and the Merging + Anubis.
Which one did you prefer in the end?
I know you loved both, and own the exaSound; the trptk label sometimes uses the Anubis for their recordings, so I guess it's not a crappy piece of material (at all).
Are both easy to connect to a multichannel processor?

Thanks in advance!

Default What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?

Bach: Musikalisches Opfer
Le Concert des Nations, Jordi Savall
AliaVox (2001), via Qobuz

Bart, you played another version the other day and reminded me how brilliant this work is, but I couldn’t find what you played on Qobuz. So I’m having to settle ([emoji41]) for his version from Jordi Savall.

Tony, that must be a great version too.
I also like this one:

Actually, they are both excellent but there are two big differences.
1)The Anubis has enough balanced channels but requires difference connectors for different pairs of speakers. Also, configuring it is a bit of a bear. Both of those are, however, issues only when setting up and not in actual use.
2)The exaSound lacks a physical volume control which is important to me.

And if you enter 'Kuijken musical offering' in Qobuz' search engine, you'll find the following albums:

Thank you Kal!

My dealer is examining the possibility of becoming an exaSound dealer; he already has Merging in his portfolio.
We'll likely compare both brands in the trptk studio in the near future.
