I cannot get enough of this symphony so I'm collecting versions that seem to hold promise.
The most remarkable story about Mahler's Second Symphony is that of Gilbert Kaplan - an economist and owner/publisher of The Institutional Investor - who loved this gorgeous piece of music so much - that he learned to conduct, and hired muisicians and a hall,so that he might conduct the symphony . . . .and bought Mahler's original manuscript

I guess that after Mr. Kaplan sold The Institutional Investor for $72,000,000, he had a little left over to jump-start his conducting career.

Although this work is dedicated to Xenakis, Riotte's idiom is less sado-modernistic than Xenakis'--Messiaen is closer. This is sort of a modern day Diabelli Variations--has 33 movements in all. Good sound.

That's right, Julian. I've heard about him and I can see how he got obsessed with Mahler's 2nd. Somehow Mr. Kaplan got good enough to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra doing the Resurrection and have the performance recorded by DG on an SACD. In that sense he's peers with Karajan, Bernstein, Abbado, Solti, etc. That's saying something.

Unfortunately I don't have millions to learn how to conduct and hire my own orchestra, chorus and soloists, so I'll just stick with buying CDs for now.

Default Elgar: Cello Concerto

This...

Elgar: Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85
Jacqueline du Pré (cello)
London Symphony Orchestra, Sir John Barbirolli

...is gorgeous. The performance is superlative and the remastered SACD recording does it full justice. A basic music library disc in my opinion.

Been away for a couple of weeks, there's been some great music played here!
First listen after two weeks on the road:

Beethoven - The Sonatas for Piano & Violin
David Oistrakh, violin
Lev Oborin, piano
Phillips 1962, 2001 cd reissue

This is my favorite set of theses sonatas. Oistrakh's playing is beautifully controlled and never overly dramatic, and Oborin complements him perfectly. Sound is very good overall: although not as well defined as some more modern recordings, the tone is beautiful.

Listening to a CD that came with our 'Luister Magazine' (you can compare it with 'Listen').

It offers a free CD every month.
This month's offering is worth listening to: 16 pieces from new releases of 'Outhere Music' that has the labels Alpha, Phi, Zig-Zag Territories, Ricercar, Aeon, Arcana, Fuga Libera, Outnote, Ramée.
Good recording quality, good artists, as we know from these labels.

Johann Sebastian Bach - Concerts avec plusieurs instruments - I
Café Zimmermann

This is the first CD of a splendid box set.
It hasn't been posted here for a while, and it thoroughly deserves to be well known!
Amandine Beyer really shows her talent as do all the other musicians.

Recordings and performances are formidable.

CD II from this set.

You can hear and sense the joy and enthusiasm with which the musicians play these masterpieces.

I enjoyed her recent Corelli Op 6 on the Zig-Zag Territoires label.
