From Sumiko:
I have seen both the Graphite and the Maple finish on Sonus faber speakers suffer sun damage before. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish (similar to a polyurethane or clear coat) is what is being damaged, not the stain underneath. That same finish is used regardless of the stain color, so different colors do not result in better protection from sun damage. The Red Violin finish is applied in the same manner as the Graphite. The process and the wood cabinet are essentially identical. |

The folks in SF has got the red right. At 60 degrees from the front the Strad reflect a silhouette of a refine lady in red. I think she will captivates many whom took a glance and it doesn't matter what the room color she is in - even white.

I like ALL the colors!! The red violin is classic .... I have seen that and the graphite in person.... and I like them both ... a lot.... but, I would probably lean more toward the red violin - just because it is more 'look at me'... and quite frankly... I like that.... I don't want the speaker to necessarily blend in with the room..... That 'red' you showed a pic of - that was quite rich as well.....I would normally lean toward the 'new' red and might have a difficult decision there.... but I see all the points on the classic red violin etc... it is very original in its color... and I do not know of any other speaker that looks like that.....
So... did something go 'bump' here? Or are we still in negotiations? Tim. |

The red violin is about 10 days from completing sale as the owner is out of the country as of now.. Here is a pic of what I'm leaning towards. I like it a little orangey... Tim my friend - the numbers have been negotiated on both transactions and I just have to decide... Hehehe It's a good predicament to be in. If only I had a walnut option my friend. I was leaning heavily in the graphite as the finish for my Futura's. When a pair of violin red Futura's came on the market from a great seller at a great price, I jumped on them. No regrets. At this price point, a blemish will turn off many potential buyers or dramatically reduce the price. Something to consider if these are not your forever speakers.

1200$ is not a huge price difference.
I'd take the pristine ones, although I prefer the graphite colour.

Joey. Yes. Red violin. 1 year pristine... No doubt. 1200 dollar diff - I would easily go for the 1 year pair w no imperfection.
Here is my opinion. It's not the imperfection- it's what caused it? Will it spread... Ie a manufacture issue ...Was it caused by carelessness by the owner... Etc... Now if u ever go to sell - guys like me will think the same. What a beautiful speaker and the sound ... Well we know that magic too. |

I agree, the $1200 price difference wouldn't be enough for me regarding the imperfection.....the red violins are beautiful. That's the way I would go without any further discounts and you wouldn't have to worry about resale. Love 'em.

I would expect a lot more than $1200 off, should be at least $2500 in my opinion.
