Certainly true compared to streaming, but I’m not sure that’s the case compared to purchased downloads.

Shouldn't be, near as I can think. Just a set of numbers.

Where the artist has their own label and/or site, or posts directly for download on Bandcamp (or other similar), I am sure you are right and they can benefit much more, and more directly. For purchased entire album downloads from regular sites if you will, also likely they get more than the pennies per stream, or fractions thereof, they receive from the streaming platforms (facts which are published).

This is great counterpoint; I'd bet that many people who promote the ease of streaming do not then buy every single album in full at download retail price they listen to, though some I know do, so for the benefit of the artists, without whom we wouldn't have this music, there is still monetary difference.

Not the same numbers for the pure streaming case, the facts are out there and given the economical cost of subscriptions, it adds up.

With the exception of Spotify I do exactly the same.

Very similar here. Have become very selective in what makes it into the library. A few hi-res downloads from time to time, but even more selective.

Have not had a CD player since 2011. CD's stored in sleeves for break-the-glass emergency recovery.

New to vinyl and enjoying, but still more selective.

For playlists, rely on streaming - library is album listening. Tidal/Roon works well here.

I fall into this category but I will add without "the ease of streaming through Roon" I most likely would never of found these new artist to buy their albums. It's a new vehicle/method of purchasing physical media today. Back many moons (some of you remember) ago I purchased albums only after hearing the music on the radio. Although, that may still happen today that's not my primary method. I want to support the artist but I cannot afford to purchase every album that I sample (sometimes 30 seconds worth) on Roon.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but back in the day (and today) on radio the artist gets paid for plays, don't they? Is that any different than streaming? Did we pay for radio plays back than? I know advertiser did/do. How much do the artist get today off radio play?

A little off topic from the OP. Sorry.

The very best-sounding digital recordings I have unequivocally are the XRCD24 Audio Wave Blue Notes re-mastered by Alan Yoshida, and they are all "just" 16/44.

I read a comment by an digital audio music reviewer once that if Alan Yoshida had mastered everything ever done in digital, we would never need "all that other stuff", namely 24/88, 24/96, and 24/192 and whatever-X DSD. And, I agree.

Cheers.
I agree with you Puma on Alan Yoshidas XRCD24 's, they sound spectacular. I also really enjoy the Hoffman Blue Note SACD reissues. For streaming, Qobuz is my service of choice. I hope the service advances someday so you can get more info on what you're listening to. For example, Maiden Voyage is hi-res at 24/192 and it shows Jan 1 1999 as the release date. If you look at the pdf booklet though, it says it's the 2012 Alan Yoshida hi-res reissue. So which one is it? With my SACD, I know it's the Hoffman and for my Hi- Res files on my server, I know it's the 2012 HDtracks Alan Yoshida reissue. I know I'm being a little fussy, but that's my $.02 plus inflation.

The Audiowave BlueNote XRCD24s (20 so far) are the best versions of those albums I own and that I've ever heard on any media,...

They say the series' last 5 may be out by end of this year finally!

I have thousands of LPs and CDs/SACDs, still occasionally play tape and I still listen to FM. I use Qobuz for streaming and with it have less of an urge to buy physical media. But for my favorite music and artists, I'll still buy the LP or CD.

That varies by country. In the US, OTA radio BMI/ASCAP/SESAC licenses only compensate the publishers and songwriters. Streaming is a different story.
