DBT can give misleading results unless both pairs of speakers are set up optimally, and it's rare that any two speakers will not have different optimum heights for listening, as well as distance from room boundaries, amount of toe-in etc.. If Harmon are using DBT to demonstrate that their speakers are superior, it's not difficult for them to tweak the setups in their favour. I'm not suggesting they've done that, intentionally or otherwise, but i would still treat any claims with considerable caution.

Having said all of that the Salon 2's are a really great speaker, and very easy to get sounding good in most rooms. But they are quite inefficient, and need nearly twice the voltage for the same SPL as a B&W 800.

Art, I bought them because I like the way they sound, not because of DBT. Not necessarily better sounding than 800 D2's. It resulted in more money in my pocket and my wife prefers the aesthetics, and I'm really fond of both (my wife and the money)!

I'm really just rolling speakers for the experience of it. I've never had a bad thought or bad thing to say about B&W D2's. If I find I prefer the B&W's after living with the Ultima 2's, I'll buy D3's. It's a hobby, I'm just playing.

It will be interesting to hear what my Mark Levinson 536's do with these Salon 2's, I pray to God they have enough 'nads. I think I'll try Audioslave "Show Me How to Live" and Metallica "Cyanide" as a test.

All good Mike. I'm very certain that you'll like them a lot. I've heard them extensively in friend's systems and I've never been less than (very) impressed. The transparency and accuracy in the mids and treble is really top notch. To my ears there's really no weakness.

I know that you are like me and that you don’t read the instructions that come with equipment. However, a quick read of the Salon 2 docs will reveal that Revel themselves state that one doesn’t need an extraordinary amount of power to make Salons sound great. In my case I have an Ayre VX5 Twenty and though I have used two more powerful amplifiers, the salons sounded substantially the same.

I heard the 802 D3s and the Salon 2s (driven by an ML 534) at the same dealer. If I had the room, would have been an easy choice for me - Salon 2s.

You really need to compare both in your own listening room, but both are very fine speakers. Ultimately it boils down to personal preference.

Agreed, but I wasn't shopping. Just making an observation.

Hi, I had the salon 2 and when my speakers weren’t producing balanced sound in my room I emailed revel support asking how much power I needed and I got a very blunt reply. 500 watts. As smooth as the tweeter is in the ultima 2 I moved on.
