SACD rip. Much as I like the John Wilson release on Chandos, the Bernstein catches fire, especially on "Rodeo," "El Salon Mexico," and "Appalachian Spring."

We decided to stay with Meijer. One of the favourite albums of Eelco Grimm, the designer of our streamer (wiith Guido Tent).

What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?
Rapa Nui Odyssey
Piano works of Bach, Chopin, Handel, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Scriabin Mahani Teave, piano Rubicon (2021), via Qobuz This was reviewed in the latest Gramophone. It’s a wonderful recital, as much for the music and playing as for the story behind it. From Allmusic: “Rapa Nui Odyssey came about when software executive Dave Fulton and his wife traveled to the Pacific Ocean island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and discovered pianist Mahani Teave teaching in her small music school there, playing on an upright piano that was apparently the first one ever brought to the island. It emerged that Teave, born in Hawaii but raised on Rapa Nui, had been trained on the Chilean mainland, at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, and toured internationally. Although signed to the Steinway & Sons label, she never released an album there. She returned to Rapa Nui to open her school and raise a family. Fulton made the arrangements for the present CD, all proceeds from which benefit the Toki Rapa Nui Music School.” The Liszt and the Rapa Nui tradional at the end are stand-outs for me, although it’s all well played. Be sure to read the liner notes from Dave Fulton. IMG_0731.jpg

Marin Marais - Troisième Livre de Pièces de Viole
François Joubert-Caillet L'Achéron Qobuz 24/88.2 A cool 4 hours and 19 minutes. I'm a fan from this viola da gamba player (and the ensemble). Between the publication of the Second Book in 1701 and that of the Third Book, ten years went by, during which Marais established himself as a composer of "tragédies lyriques". In the meantime, however, a number of young viol players, some of whom had been his pupils, had just published their first collections of pièces de viole. Marais therefore had to reaffirm his position as the reigning master of the genre, a mission accomplished to perfection with this new opus, in which he strove to offer his public easier pieces alongside others that of a more demanding nature, in order to ‘satisfy those who are more advanced upon the viol’. His style had changed too: here, character pieces form an increasingly important complement to the traditional suites. © Ricercar
