Default My New 1911

Made the unfortunate (to my wallet) decision to drop by the local gunshop this afternoon. Been thinking about the Kimber 1911 in 9mm since reading some 9mm reloading test info that used one as the test mule. Very accurate pistol. After handling the Kimber and the S&W my preference for S&W got the best of me and I 'signed on the dotted line'. Now just have to wait the requisite 8-10 weeks to get my paperwork approved by the state of NJ and I'll be good to go.

Thanks , Sean. Am assuming that you meant '1911'. I did compare to the Colt 1911 in 9mm, which the shop had, along with the Kimber. But, the fit and finish of the Colt was pretty pedestrian compared to the others. I've been unimpressed with the recent Colt consumer offerings. While they used to be 'high-end', seems the new management has decided that they should be a 'mid-fi' player in the consumer market and that is just how the Colt felt in comparison to the other two.

Hey Glenn, thanks for chiming in with the comparison. It's great to get to hear first hand experience from you handling both in-person. I have read such things about Colt's latest....kinda disappointing to hear.

I was referring to Colt's 1911, indeed, but I think they came out with the Series 80 in 1991 and labeled it as such. Kind of confusing if you ask me.

Colt 1991
Thanks for the info (and thanks, Ivan, for blowing up the pic - have not figured out how to do so with my new laptop). Was not aware of this Colt series. Folks I know who shoot Colt 1911s in bullseye competition are shooting their Gold Cup series of one sort or another. Couple of them are Madori-built, who I understand was one of the premier pistol-smiths 'back in the day'.

For anyone interested in shooting the 9mm competitively, the latest issue of "Handloader" magazine has a good article on accurate ammo for same.

Plus, just heard from my shop that I am not getting the S&W. Someone else had put a deposit on it earlier in the day and in the crush/rush they neglected to put the pistol back. Guess I'm getting the Kimber Gold Match II for the same price. While I'm a fan of S&W, my second choice would be the Kimber, but the margin is very narrow. Sort of six of one or half dozen of the other type of thing. I ask if they could order another S&W and they said they could, but quoted delivery is 6+ months. That's even longer than it takes to get my NJ purchase permit.

Can you post a pick of the Kimber?
Both excellent guns.
I'm sure you'll like the Kimber.

The process speeds up if you move South. Congrats, it's a fine piece for protection.
