Default Philip Glass | recommendations ?

At concerts by Vikingur Olafsson (Piano) and more recently by Mari Samuelsen (Violin), I have been blown away by pieces composed by Philip Glass. Live, it is like the music is tapping energy straight from the space time fabric and at both occasions I found it quite overwhelming.

I would like to learn more about excellent recordings of Philip Glass works but frankly I’m a bit lost, there is so much available.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Step right into my office, I'll advise you!

The Vikingur Olafsson album is a gem... (btw, so is his new release where he performs Bach)

i am curious, where did you see Ms Samuelsen perform Glass? Slovakia? Istanbul, Turkey? I know of no released recordings.... please share if you do.

Anyway, a recent release by Simone Dinnerstein / A Far Cry,
Circles: Piano Concertos by Bach + Glass is excellent. Tracks 4-6, Piano Concerto No. 3.

Lavinia Meijer has a 2016 release entitled, The Glass Effect: The Music of Philip Glass. I thought it one of the best releases of the year. (besure toi seek out Koyaanisqatsi on the album.

This and Olafsson's 2017 release, Philip Glass: Piano Works are my current "go to" albums to wow people to the splendor of Glass.

There is soooooooooo much to recommend you need to share more of what you are looking for in Glass.

I am currently digesting his 11th symphony which arrived at my doorstep just last week... finally released.

a sampler of sorts????

Maybe this 2015 release would offer a greater range of exposure to Mr Glass? But please start with the 3 recording from my first reply.

Ed...thank you for the tips. I already have the Vikingur album...it is indeed a gem.

Mari Samuelsen performed Echorus and Mishima closing at a Concert in Hasselt Belgium as part of the Nordic Night(s) festival. The Echorus piece was breathtaking. I would very much love to discover more works like that one.

On a side note… Fratres by Arvo Pärt was played as well... for me a discovery.

Superb disc. I use it for late night listening often. Very ethereal.

A big shout out to Ed (aka eljr) and Bart for showing me the path.

So far it has been a great journey of discovery and Symphonies 1 to 10 have yet to arrive

Very nice collection you have in this picture!

What is amazing is how much Mr. Glass is still producing... he is no youngster.
