Monumental XVX Review by Robert Harley of TAS

September 2020 issue 308. "I've never listened to a speaker quite like the Chronosonic XVX. It is the most realistic sounding, the most musically expressive, and the most intellectually and emotionally engaging loudspeaker I've heard." Robert Harley Editor-in-Chief The Absolute Sound. I have great respect for this man. The review is 12 full pages and the photography is beautiful done by John Giolas who wrote "The Wilson Way".

This is a review worth reading. Robert has written countless reviews and many books on Audio. He is the consummate pro. I believe he would agree with me when I say it is the greatest, longest, most comprehensive review he has ever written.

I have owned three Wilson speakers, Maxx3, Alexx, and now finally my XVX. I humbly believe I understand a few things about Wilsons. Unless you simply have the money to burn, I don't think you should buy an XVX as a first speaker. One of my biggest apprehensions (and I voiced this on AA) was whether the XVX was above my station in life. I felt comfortable with my Maxx3 and my Alexx and I enjoyed both speakers immensely. Wilsons are amazing in the sense that their flaws are well disguised. You only realize them when you hear a better Wilson.

At the very end of his review he mentions an amazing property of the XVX. Its ability to compensate for power amplifier delay. Robert spends a good deal of time on this, explaining that one month after the "final" installation, John Giolas moved the tweeter module back by the equivalent of 3.5 microseconds to compensate for his Hercules II's group delay. "If you had not heard the compensated version you wouldn't have thought anything was amiss, but the compensation was a worthwhile improvement." He goes on to state how the compensation was easy to hear.

This is quite above me. That's simply amazing. I'm a layperson, not a pro. However, when I first heard Wilsons many years ago I noticed that they were the only speakers that were absolutely meant for on axis listening. However you windup with a Wilson after all the adjustments, etc. the left tweeter should be aimed at your left ear and the right at your right ear. If you don't like the way the Wilson sounds with this arrangement, maybe you should get another speaker.

Robert describes in his conclusion the "physicality" of the XVX as its essence. For me at my station I describe it as "humility". My XVX could have sounded terrible in my room and with my gear. It's one thing to spend a hundred grand on a much smaller speaker (my Alexx). It sounded great in my room with my equipment. My XVX sounds even much better in all respects to the point that I can say it's the best high end purchase I ever made.
