From the top of the HP/TAS List of the best LP's
Listening to . . . . Don Shirley Trio - Water Boy
I first bought this recording in the fall of 1963 - it was a Cadence recording, titled "Don Shirley Trio" which was later re-mastered and released by Columbia. with the title "Water Boy" Unbelievably good sounding for a 50 year old LP. This recording is featured among the top 10 - Best of the Best "informal" LP's on Harry Pearson's list. Both images below are of the same recording - the original Cadence and the re-mastered Columbia. (I think the Cadence sounds better - I have both) When I looked up a cover picture for this post, I learned that Don Shirley had died this past April at age 86. He was one of a kind - a composer, pianist, conductor. He earned 4 PhD degrees and was a genius, whom I shall miss. I think I own every recording he ever made and I admired him and his music greatly. Until the time of his death, he was a resident of Carnegie Hall - had a gorgeous apartment upstairs in that building. RIP Don Shirley.

I am listening to the album that introduced e Bossa Nova to the U.S.
Originally titled "Brazil's Brilliant João Gilberto" (1961) and later re-issued under the title "Gilberto & Jobim" (1964) This was the first introduction of Bossa Nova - picked up a little later by Stan Getz, who partnered with these musicians to further popularize the Brazilian music. Listening to the Capital Stereo LP - Gilberto & Jobim Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim (and his orchestra) This 1964 re-issue was released in the U.S.at the height of the Bossa Nova craze.
