Default Mountain Bikes

After an embarrassingly long hiatus, I have pulled my hardtail mtn. bike out of the dust and cobwebs, cleaned it off, had it tuned up and am starting to ride again.

I have a Specialized Rockhopper I bought around '91 or '92. I upgraded it over the years soon after with some choice parts: a Trek front shock, Shimano Deore XT brakes and derailers and more.

My immediate goal is to get to about 60 miles/week while I get in shape. After that who knows. Time is more of an issue than it used to be.

Anyway, I am thinking about a buying a new bicycle at the end of the year, and might go for a decent full suspension 29er trail bike. By budget will be in the range of $2-3K if that's enough for FS. Otherwise, I'll get a new 29er hardtail.

What you are all riding? Any suggestions for what to try out? I have Specialized, Trek and Cannondale dealers very close.

I ride a Rocky Mountain. The model is an Elevation, with upgraded parts. It is about 10 or 11 years old and has done me well over the years. I highly recommend their mountain bikes. Their site is www.bikes.com Their frames are outstanding. Have upgraded parts over the yeas but never considered a new frame as I am happy with it.

Attached is a picture taken today as it sits on my work bench with a broken chain from my last ride.

Yes... I think I too will dust the cobwebs off the bike (Scott Scale 10). Time to get in shape for summer

I used to ride a cannondale mountain bike but have now switched over to road bikes. Getting a little older dictated smoother terrain. Am now riding a Pinarello Dogma 2. More bike than I will ever need but wonderful to ride.

I have been riding this carbon Ghost 2978 this year and really liking it. 100mm of travel it is a rocket. Perfect trail bike especially with a dropper post.

I've got a h/built steel racer with oodles of campag, and very nice campag at that. Can't really comment on high end MTB's, use a simple highbrid for daily use.

Thanks guys. A bunch of you are riding carbon. I know that will be out of my price range. I am looking at two possibilities:

Trek Superfly AL 100 Elite
Specialized Epic Comp 29

Dean
I ride the Epic 29er 80-100 miles per week. The brain system for the rear suspension works really well. I ride carbon on the road, and don't miss it on the mtb bike. I think I would take the savings of the carbon frame, and put into other upgrades.
