He did make Savannah his home for many years (according to reports - I don't know that for sure). He reportedly died in Savannah.
Duane and bassist Berry Oakley died about a year apart in motorcycle accidents in Macon. Both are buried (side by side) in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon, where the band hung out in the early years. "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" was reportedly written by Dickie Betts there and he didn't know what to call the song, looked up and saw that on a tombstone and he called it that. There are reports of folks going on a pilgrimage to the cemetery to pay their respects (and drink and injest other things) at the grave sites. If you put Greg there too, I suspect there'd be a pretty constant progression of folks in and out of there. Totally sad. End of an era (of which there have been too many lately). |
