 http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2363609,00.asp Square said Tuesday that it has made available its mobile payment system for Apple OS and Android devices, allowing street vendors and other users to accept credit-card payments on the go. Square launched last December, and chief executive Jack Dorsey said then that the company hoped to formally roll out in 2010. "Since then it has become clear that this product does not have a singular grand launch, but many iterations and refinements," Dorsey wrote in a blog post. Actually, this appears to be that grand launch, although it's certainly understandable if Square tweaks the process over time with additional refinements. Vendors can sign up for Square at SquareUp.com. Square works by providing a small credit-card reader, for free, than can be inserted into the audio jack of the phone. Users sign their name using the phone, and then the card is authenticated over the phone's connection. According to reports, Square charges a flat fee of 2.75% plus 15 cents for every swipe, and 3.5% plus 15 cents for any charge where a card is not present but the number is keyed in. "Today, in addition to releasing clients for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Android devices, we are opening up our first cut at activating card processing and pricing, and sending out our first production batch of free card readers," Dorsey added. "All represent just the beginning of what Square is striving to become: a simple payment utility for everyone."

 Well, for some... This tech is actually last generation from what I hear; in Japan, just about any purchase can bill directly off your mobile with no third party app. I'm also shocked paypal hasn't thought of something here, since they do a plethora of merchant transactions now.

Jim.......That sure brings back memories. I carried that Motorola brick for a couple of years in the early 90's. In its leather holder with the belt clip it would practically pull your pants down. Cellular technology sure has come a long ways.
