All this and I can't find a decent cabinet maker in my area to save my life for a Cornscala project.

I have the Martinelli Trachorns in my Khorns, those 2" Vtracs are good for losing your hearing! The K-33 already goes to 400hz, whats the point of the 2" 300hz horn unless you prefer 125db sound levels.

Lowering the mid's HP will make the speaker more of a point source, improving imaging and soundstage.

"Lowering the mid's HP will make the speaker more of a point source, improving imaging and soundstage. "
That's silly! The lower you go in frequency the more undefined the directionality becomes. Lowering the crossover below 400 just puts a heavier load on the squawker driver and requires a larger horn limiting performace in the upper midrange. The only reason to move to a 2-inch horn is if you want to upgrade the K55 driver. That is very expensive and gains you very littel! The K55 just isn't that bad. No 1-inch driver I know of will go down to 400Hz without distortion let alone 300Hz! Even though I offer a 2-inch horn I recommend the 1-inch. 2-inch horns are for movie theaters AL K. |

I'm certainly in no position to argue anything Al says but I will say that going from the 3-way Khorn (with Al's ES networks, JBL-2404 but, stock 401/55) to a 2-way speaker has indeed created MUCH more of a point source sound for me and the "sound bubble" comes together within 10 feet of the speaker rather than the 30' it took for my Khorns.
I have thought for 30 years that 3-way was by definition always better than 2-way unless you wanted a little 2-way bookshelf speaker for background music. I have since learned that this is simply NOT true and a well executed 2-way will sound substantially better than a well executed 3-way. To that end, I keep suggesting to those who want to try the upgrade bug to use the Klipsch K510 with their Belle's or LaScalas and make them a 2-way speaker. More work perhaps but after I personally heard the vast improvement in "point source" after dropping a crossover point, I think it's worth it. |

"use the Klipsch K510 with their Belle's"
Kindly elaborate in detail. I love the woofer and midrange horns on Klipsch heritage (especially with DeanG's crosovers) but I hate the horn tweeter. I'd gladly go to a 2 way, it's an inherently better design.

Here's some pictures. If you want a "balls to the wall" solution then I'd suggest you consider doing something like this, biamp it and use an active crossover with some signal delay mixed in. You could even build your own top hat for it to help keep things looking stock. hmmm.... well crapola.... I'm trying to figure out how to attach a picture. Send me a PM or email to punk@nxs.net and I'll send you some pictures of a Bell with the K510 on top as well as a LaScala with a 510 and a 402. |
