i have an option to get combo REF6 and REF150SE used. im not sure i will be able to bring it home to audition with my NEAT Ultimatum mf5 speakers.
is ref150 a good alternative to ayre vx-5 twenty? |

I can't comment on the Ayre, but I absolutely love the ref6 and ref150se combination. I actually bought one from my dealer used, but it had an issue so I returned it and bought a used gs150 instead. Both are fantastic amps! If you can get a good deal, you will be very happy with it.

This is a spectacular combination and a great value at retail--a steal used. The Ref 150se IMHO is one of the best tube amps made regardless of price. And, of course, the Ref 6, well, check the reviews.

Has anyone tried pairing the ar5se with a Krell fpb 700cx, any advice in doing so?

I feel compelled to chime in here and mention that the best solid state amp I have heard with my ref6 is the Luxman m700u. I imagine the m900u is even better. I have tried quite a few solid state amps to try to find something which at least equals my ref75se, and this is the first that actually betters it in some ways. People always try passlabs and I have tried that, and the ayre v5xe, and this Luxman is clearly better. Not selling the 75se, but not selling the Luxman either. And that is a first for solid state for me.

P.S. I will add that it had more clarity than the tube amps (even the Ref160 monos). The Luxman amps are certainly detailed sounding. |

Marc-
Thank you for the Luxman M900u SS amplifier! You were very patient, but everything worked out great on this end. I did not like this amplifier at first - too melodic and not analytical enough for me. But I added a Luxman CL1000 preamp and SR Galileo LE speaker cables, and after about 2 weeks, my system sounds wonderful. Thanks again - Gerry |
