Default $845,000 Porsche 918 Spyder up in smoke

Because of its nature as one of the priciest, fastest, rarest super cars in existence, a Porsche 918 Spyder burning to the ground in a Canadian gas station will make headlines.

E.......Witnesses state that gas spilled during the car's refueling in a Toronto gas station and ignited via the twin exhaust pipes. Those pipes protrude upwards from the engine compartment, rather than exiting out back like most other vehicles. All involved were unharmed.

Porsche should have done a Failure Mode Analysis (FMEA) on that design so that something like that would have never happened. I'm surprised they didn't. I'll bet that's one unhappy customer. My guess is that once the US DOT gets wind of this, the car will have to be modified before it can be sold in the United States.

IIRC, the original 918 had exhaust pipe exiting low along the sides of the car (my Minichamps model does, for example).

I think they have signs at gas stations that say "Please turn off engine before fueling."

Well, at least he did not blow up the whole station. That would have been the exclamation point.

I was at a 918 roll out and took this picture of the exhaust. Fueling would require care. Of course 900hp super cars are not for the stupid.

I can see how you can drop fuel on the exhaust but you have to try hard or be really stupid.

Sad to see such car go up in smoke and i'm glad no one was hurt beside someone's ego.
