The Mandelring Quartett is known for their Shostakovich cycle, and now they are taking on Mendelssohn. Both discs are fantastic: they play with amazing passion and perfection. Add in stunning sound, and these are essential recordings!

On the Sony 5400ES:
LAGQ Brazil
Wonderful string play! Not exactly Classical, but I keep it in that section of the library. :^)
Regards,
Jim

I just put my Sony 5400 ES back into my system today! I was using an Oppo 95 for dual duty to simplify my system a bit, but after living with it for a while, I missed the Sony's finer resolution of detail. The Oppo also seemed to exaggerate the rear channel levels, which is fine for movies, less so for music! It is, however, a superb DVD/Blu-ray player.

Listening to . . . JOHANNES BRAHMS - Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 83
RICHARD STRAUSS - Salome: Dance of the Seven Veils

London Symphony Orchestra & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Antal Dorati, Conductor

A Chesky CD re-master of earlier RCA recordings

Originally produced by Charles Gerhardt and recorded by Kenneth Wilkinson in the 1960's.

A superb sonic extravaganza, typical of the early Wilkinson recordings for Decca/London and RCA and very well remastered by Chesky. I haven't played this CD for a good many years and was pleasantly surprised this morning at just how much I liked it.

In joyful anticipation of the concert tomorrow: Il Giardino Armonico will play Händels Concerti Grossi!

This 3-SACD box set is already a very fine experience.

Verdi - Il Trovatore.
On BBC Radio 3 FM now, a live broadcast from the Met NY.
Takes me back to the days we lived in Boston (MA), when I used to be glued to the Met live broadcasts on Saturday afternoons.
