Listened to the second volume today. These Preludes and Fugues are so imaginative, and played to perfection. Great sound.

A Telarc SACD featuring a good Bach performance, but the recorded sound is bit muffled for my taste.
Playing this tonight. I'm enjoying it and the recorded sound seems much more appealing to me than the previous time I heard this SACD. Maybe my newly installed difusors are helping or the low SPL level is more appropriate.

Dvorak: Symphony 9, Carnival Overture, Slavonic Dances
New York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein

My reference for the "New World". I haven't played this in a while, but Bart's exploration a couple of weeks ago reminded me how enjoyable this music is. This cd issue also includes the overture and 3 dances from Smetana's Bartered Bride, fun and invigorating stuff.

Moving to Mono:
Schuman - Credendum
The Philepdelphia Orchestra
Eugen Ormandy Conducting
Kirchner - Piano Concerto
Philharmonic - Symphony Orchestra of New York
Dimitri Mitropoulos Conducting
Credendum "commissioned by the United States National Commission for UNESCO through the U. S. Department of State."
Kirchner Piano concerto "commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation."
Amazing mono recording with dynamics and excitement galore! Wonderful presentation of less known works.
Columbia Masterworks LM 5185 (1957)
Regards,
Jim

What a peculiar collection of artists. I hadn't heard of this; thanks for posting. I wonder what the negotiations were like re: Decca vs. grp label.

I played it several times and this music is growing on me. The score has a brooding mood with beautiful passages. The performance is excellent and the recorded sound is top-notch (I have the SACD version).

This won Gramophone magazine's Record of the Year award for 2001.

This just came in.
I'm a big fan of Vaughan Williams' music.
The Symphony is fantastic.
And the Butterworth piece is a great bonus.
Terrific (multichannel) sound.
