A double LP on Milestone Records of the Two trio sessions for Riverside by Thelonious Monk.
"Plays Duke Ellington"and "The Unique"Monk enjoying himself with great jazz standards.

Well I've heard the first four albums of Miles Davis after leaving Bird. Birth of the Cool and Conception are collaborative efforts, with great work by Mulligan, Konitz, Rollins and others. They both have about 15 support guy's, Stan Getz appears on two tracks without Miles, and on both albums he often shares the spotlight and is absent on several numbers as well. No worries, they are both fine.

Dig is my favorite, with sublime suppleness from both Miles and Rollins and Jackie Mclean showing his chops nicely also on three tracks. He only has a 7 piece band here, and it's a superb start to his small(ish) band work. Mingus and Blakey don't hurt being on all tracks.

He's more on his own up front on Blue Haze, but he misses a stellar sax guy, and his style is a bit more blocky than on Dig. Perhaps the weak point so far, I'll give it a few more listens though. Max Roach drum's on three tracks, and Mingus switches to piano, but it's in support. I hope not to darn it with feint praise after more investigation.

So it's been a fantastic xmas present, and i've gone and ordered 22 of his Columbia recordings in boxset as the only possible reaction. The next four on the list will be Walkin',The Musings of Miles, Blue Moods and Quintet/Sextet 1955. Nothing to fear there!

Ben Webster & Don Byas - Two Kings Of The Tenor
Commodore Records (LP)
Compilation: Side 1 Ben W. & Side 2. Don B.
The music on this recording is from to 40's. Not as hi-fidelity as later recordings.
Gives a great insight to the recorded history of Ben W. and Don B.
Also get to hear the Side Catlett Quartet & Hot Lips Page Orchestra
