This album is legendary. It is one of the best in the ECM catalog and was one of their best selling records. Steve Eliovson recorded this album with Collin Walcott on ECM and dropped off the face of earth, never to record again. I read somewhere that he was in Europe to record a second album when he had a skiing accident in Switzerland. Then things fell apart and he return to his native South Africa to regroup. He never did. So this is it, the only thing he ever recorded.

Nevertheless, if you like acoustic guitar jazz, this is a must have for even a small collection. I have the original vinyl and it sounds just fantastic. And you can never go wrong with Collin Walcott.

Steve Eliovson, "Dawn Dance"
w/Collin Walcott
ECM 1198

Erik Dolphy with Mal Waldron & Ron Carter - Where? = The Quest

"The Quest" was recommended a while here.
It is delicious sixties jazz.
With Booker Ervin and Eric Dolphy, it even sounds a bit like Mingus' albums from that time.
"Where?" comes as an extra on this CD.
It has much of the same personnel and dates from one week before "The Quest". It has a different style though: much smoother, less edges. It'll get less play time here but has still nice moments.
Good remastering.

Already CD 4 of the 6-CD box set.
This is really good!
It also shows the talent of some lesser known geniuses like George Coleman (tenor sax).
I will cherish these recordings.

Arrow From the Top of the TAS/HP Super LP List - Best of the Best

This was the first "jazz" record I ever bought. - In 1961 - and it is as new and fresh sounding as the day I bought it.

This recording is in the top 10 on the Harry Pearson/Absolute Sound list of the best LP's and it is extraordinary in many ways - the playing - Don Shirley was (and is) unreal. He is the proud owner of three PhD degrees and is one of the most accomplished musicians extant. Until very recently, he was an upstairs resident in Carnegie Hall. I think Carnegie Hall "kicked all the residents out" in a recent renovation.

Don Shirley holds a Doctorate of Music, Doctorate of Psychology (University of Chicago, Phi Beta Kappa), and Doctorate in Liturgical Arts. He speaks eight languages fluently, and is considered an expert painter as well.

Quote:
He has composed 3 symphonies, two piano concerti, a cello concerto, three string quartets, a one-act opera, works for organ, piano and violin, a symphonic tone poem based on Finnegan's Wake and a set of "Variations" on the legend of Orpheus in the Underworld.

Don Shirley's music is hard to categorize. It is possible to say that as an arranger-composer he treats each piece of music as a new composition, not just an arrangement. Don plays Standards in a non-standard way. He is a virtuoso, playing everything from show tunes, to ballads, to his personal arrangements of Negro spirituals, to jazz, and always with the overtone of a classically-trained musician who has utmost respect for the music he is playing.
The selections are wonderful - most enjoyable music.

The sound quality of the recording is superb. (as witness, it being on the HP/TAS list.)

I have several copies - the one I'm listening to is the original issue - by Cadence Records and the Album Title is Don Shirley Trio

Columbia Records re-released the album a few years later with the title Don Shirley Trio - Water Boy

Same album, same music, but I actually like the original better.

I can't exactly remember what was the first jazz album I bought, but I am really pretty sure it was this one:

Eddie Harris/Les McCann, "Swiss Movement"
recorded live at The Montreux Jazz Festival, 1969
Atlantic SD 1537

And I still have my original, beat up copy.
