The rhythm section is awesome.

Over the past 3 weeks, I have been listening to some of my favorite jazz releases of 2012. Of course, this cannot be a "best of" list as it necessarily reflects my biases and the fact that I have not listened to all jazz releases from the past year. My preferences, and therefore the list, reflect a strong preference for post Ornette Coleman jazz. The list is alphabetical, by artist -

Bobby Bradford/Frode Gjerstad/Ingebrigt Haker Flaten/Paal Nilssen-Love - Kampen - NoBusiness Records vinyl only

Ravi Coltrane - Sprit Fiction - Blue Note

Dave Douglas - Be Still - Greenleaf vinyl

Harris Eisenstadt - Canada Day III - Songlines

Michael Formanek - Small Places - ECM

Billy Hart - All Our Reasons - ECM

Vijay Iyer - Accelerando - ACT Music vinyl

Living By Lanterns - New Myth/Old Science - Cuneiform Records vinyl

Simon Nabatov - Solo: Spinning Songs of Herbie Nichols - Leo Records

Ted Nash - The Creep - Plastic Sax vinyl

Reissues and Archival Releases -

Keith Jarrett European Quartet - Sleeper - ECM

Magico - Carta de Amor - ECM

Charles Mingus - The Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65 - Mosaic Records
