Physics Today - March 2014 has an article on edge detection on record grooves by Carl Hooper.

I attach an image with an explanation.

Wow that was excellent reading,thank you!!!

I like how Masterlu has this site set when someone posts an attachment!! (I clicked OPEN and it opened seperatly in my PDF viewer (Most of the times PDF files open embedded in my browser and sometimes they dont open! (If they are too big,etc))
