Why more pre power with classical?
Probably a silly question, but why do I have to turn my pre up higher for classical (mainly orchestral) than with more popular/rock?
I find I'm at 15-20 for popular music and more 40+ for classical. No dB meter so not sure if it is absolute or perceived volume. Interested in other experiences. |

If you are listening to CD's especially those over 15 years old I think you will see you have to turn all of them up when compared to current releases. This is not just for classical releases.

True. But find it to be true even with recent Rattle / Berlin releases.

Most cleassical has a larger dynamic reange and thus requires more power if it is a good recording.
A lot of pop music for example has less range, what they do is flatten out the loud and quite passages, and thus that makes it louder from A-Z, but when the requirements for such instruments are requested such in in classical it is larger demand. I have a Telarc Disc in SACD with all the movie sound tracks, Williams etc and once with the classic 1812 etc. Man on man, you have to be way careful the 1st time through. They even have warning labels on the disc as a result of the mega amounts of dynamic range. On top of the extended range, classical music in many instances has more dynamics too in terms of frequency response. Anyway sorry to be brief but this should about size it up for ya. |

Some of my recordings sound very loud at -30dB. Others I need to turn it up to -20dB or even -15dB to get satisfying sound pressure levels. |

I got some remastered rock SACDs that are supposed to be some of the best for that kind of music.
To my ears, an ordinary classical music recording usually blows away, sonically, these highly engineered rock recordings not captured in a real acoustical space. It's a pity because I do like listening to rock/pop sometimes but I find it very unsatisfying. |
