Just bought a Leica D-Lux 4
Taking the big Nikon DSLR around is a hassle, and people tend to be intimidated by the "serious looking" camera and big lenses.
After seeing some amazing pictures from a friend, I decided to buy a Leica D-Lux 4 ($699) and boy am I having lots of fun with it. I know that it's based on a Panasonic model, but the black metal body, (apparently) custom SW, 3-year warranty, Leica's software for RAW format photos and the Red Leica badge are worth the extra $200 for me. It's the first time that I was motivated enough to actually study the entire manual and learn and take advantage of all the features. I particularly like the custom settings where you can simulate the film you want (e.g. grainy B&W, soft-vintage colors, super-sharp and highly saturated, etc.) The custom film capability coupled with the multiple exposures (e.g. up to 3 types of film for a given shot) makes it possible to shoot the same pictures with very different results (e.g. regular, B&W, vivid.) I will eventually upload new pics of my system, but in the meantime here's a good view/intro to the camera. For $800 (including 3 batteries and 2 8GB cards) I have something I can take with me everywhere and not worry too much about it being stolen, lost or bringing too much attention to me - because it looks like a cheapo point-and-shoot. Highly recommended, Alberto |

Alberto.......That is a very nice carry-around camera. Besides all the great features you mentioned, you get the incredible Leica DC Vario-Summicron high-aperture lens developed specifically for digital compact cameras. Leica glass is world renowned. Great camera. Have a blast, and post a few shots from time to time for us to enjoy.

Thanks Ivan.
I know I haven't been on the forum lately, but I haven't been on ANY forums. When I got this fun camera, my first thought was to share it with you guys. I am taking it to Death Valley soon for another Survivor Dude solo adventure. Alberto |

Good choice. The Panasonic LX3 (basically the same as D-Lux 4) has received many praise. You will be happy with it!

Alberto........Thank you. Getting to know a new camera is always a challenge, even when it is not a feature packed, monster SLR. Looking forward to future shots.

Alberto, I had a Leica 35mm I don't remember the model number now and while it was more like a point and shoot type that I bought for ease of carrying around, it more than kept up with my then 35mm SLR cameras from Nikon and Canon. Have fun with it.
