Great thread Ivan. And kudos to putting together the Saturn V.
Sure, I was a rocket builder when I was young. I think the second or third kit I bought was the Mercury Redstone. Of course, it was beyond my ability, but I had to put together a space rocket. The most difficult part was cutting out all the struts for the top of the capsule, the red part in the photo below. This picture must be from a later kit because the struts look plastic. When I bought mine in the mid 70s, they were wood and we had to cut each one out and assemble that part. That was hard. I was lucky that my high school was not far away, and like many in the US, it had large grounds. For model rocketry, it was ideal. In any case, it was much more interesting than playing baseball. Estes was my gateway rocket. Later, I began to fashion rockets and launchers out of paper and launch them from my backyard into our river. This was around the time I began loading my own .243 ammo. When I had spare gunpowder, it went into my rockets. When not, I opened old shotgun shells and pilfered theirs. I guess the craziest thing I ever did was attach a C engine to a small model car. We shot it up our street. Now, not surprisingly, it flew, but then, we expected it to just go down the street very fast. Well, it took off and hit a neighbor's garage, and when we tried to retrieve it, they said we were breaking into their garage. They came to see my parents, and sadly, the rocket program was grounded. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. ron Last edited by bachrocks; 10-12-2013 at 05:48 AM. Reason: Correct iPad edits |

We built G-force rocket sleds using a long cable wire and put white mice in them. It was our home grown NASA program. The mice were fine but I suspect they were rather confused. We wanted to one day build a human sled. Good thing we never did.

I remember as a kid we were into rockets for a while. My dad built a 4' Saturn V and the first time he launched it the chutes didn't deploy and it stuck about 2' into the ground.
