will a half inch tape sound better than a quarter inch tape- etc etc etc.

Scott.......The track width and the tape speed are some of the determining factors that directly impact record and playback quality. Obviously the more oxide you can spread a signal across in any given second of tape travel aross the recorder's heads will yield better dynamics, frequency range and signal to noise ratios. The difference in those areas is reflected between my two reel to reel machines. The half track heads produce greater dynamics and a better signal to noise ratio than the quarter track heads on the other tape deck while recording at the same speed.

Half inch two track tape machines are not that plentiful, and trying to find new tape at a cost you could live with may be even more difficult. Half inch two track tape machines that come to mind are the Studer A80, Otari MTR-10, and the Ampex ATR-102. Good luck trying to find one of those babies in good to excellent condition.

I think another REALLY BIG problem would be finding 1/2" tape program material to purchase and play.

I'm sure it's easier to find 1" and 2", 8 to 24 track machines than 1/2" models, but finding any program material in that format is the real trick.

Gary.......In a quick search for pre-recorded 1/2" reel to reel recordings, I found nothing. I did see where U.S. Recording has 2500' reels of 1/2" tape on 10.5" metal reels for about $90.00 a reel for the best quality tape. At 15" per second (80' per minute), that's about 30 minutes of half track recording in a single direction. Half track recording doesn't allow for the tape to be turned over and recorded in the reverse direction like quarter track recording does. $90.00 for 30 minutes of recording time can get expensive quick.

One can get TTP on 1/2 inch tape. Course it's a lot more expensive.

Finding & subscribing to any new tape program material is a challenge. I just wish there was more studio master material than TTP offerings. I really love the format & want to focus more on analogue tape (1/4" 15ips) this year...

Thanks for the information. As you can tell I am still on a Reel to Reel kick. I just like they way the reels look when they turn. Anyway, I would only need to rerecord some of my more audiophile like cds, lps etc. I would estimate that I would need around thirty or fourty albums rerecorded on a larger size tape-reel to reel.
Miles- I was told that TTP would only play on one of United Audio's specially prepared Reel to Reel Machines. I am wrong in thinking this?
There is currently a Tascam 1 inch reel to reel machine up on Ebay for a reasonable price. I am really holding out for a two inch machine. I am in no rush. I am thinking Tascam as I think the sound produced by Tascam is deeper and fuller than Studer. I have heard Studer a couple of times and I find the sound to be thin and emphasizing the high end of the sound.
I am more than happy with my two Teac 3340s for now. Since I am just rerecording older lps, cds etc; maybe I should just focus on redoing cables and learning to use a better recording technique.
Tascam makes a ATR 60 and ATR 80 that I think I like. I am not in any rush and would- ha ha ha like to wait until Social Security sets in to be in a better position to buy one. Hopefully I have 22 months to go.
