A little research, and I learned this with the MCD1100, some McIntosh equipment can appear broken or malfunction and this can be all due to things being a bit out of alignment during shipping.

In my case, the C1000 Tube PreAmp left facing Output Meter did not operate. Seldom it's the jewel. More often than not, a simple reseating of the connecting red and black cable is all that is necessary to be up and running.

I've attached two photos. One shows the cover plate secured by 4 screws. The other, a look at the circuit board. The red and black cable I secured is the one located that upper top left.

A little bit of reseating and boom! We've got active meters and no trip to repair or doing with out your toy.

David.......Years ago I had the same issue with a brand new MC300. Right out of the shipping cartons, into my rack, and the right channel meter was not working. I pulled the amp back out of the rack, pulled the cover off the back of the chassis behind the meter, reset the small connector, and bingo the meter was working and never had another issue with it.

I'm obviously a Mc devotee, but why should that happen to a new unit?

Is there a problem with securing the cable to its connector in manufacturing that it doesn't survive shipping?

Hi Gary. I really do not believe this is a McIntosh phenomena. I have purchased many things: from electronic equipment to cars and ever so often, something just comes loose. We live in an imperfect word.

McIntosh Equipment is fragile and it makes sense why they go to such pain staking lengths to package things so well and even with this effort, things happen - it just does.

There is a great deal of support out there to remedy these rare occasions.

Same exact thing happened to me when I bought a used MC2102 tube amp. One of the meters didn't work. My stomach sank. Quick conversation with the seller and I had my local Mc repair wizard fix her right up. Never gave me any trouble after that. The shipping gauntlet is always a gamble, even with gear packaged as well as McIntosh.

good post, yep you have to figure too that the shippers are not the most gentle folks. Kinda like the airports with your nice luggage, they throw and toss it around pretty hard at times, even when stuff is sent freight.

Always nice when you do not have to send and wait for a repair.

Dave.......Even if the components are not mishandled at the freight distribution centers, a couple of days strapped to a pallet that is bouncing and vibrating on the floor of a 40' trailer going down the Interstate at 70 mph can jar many things loose. Those aren't air-ride trailers that the majority of freight gets delivered with. It's a rough ride.

I agree Dan...my C1000 was deliver on a secured skid delivered by UPS Freight with a ton of insurance. The way that it was shipped, you could not toss any portion of the freight. Even so, this does not insulate it from vehicle movement.

I'm glad McIntosh is somewhat tinker friendly!
