In praise of small systems
With all the talk of Wilson XVX's, Alexia, B&W 801's, Magico M series, Sonus Faber Aida, and others, I thought I would speak up (sic) for the little guys, like our living room system.
We recently moved and the new home has a beautifully finished lower level. Originally intended for a listening and home theater extravaganza, those plans went kaput when the little guy showed up (picture). The family vote was 9-1 and one 'I can't raise my hand yet', in favor of a playroom extravaganza. So, near field listening, and when I feel sorry for myself I swivel around to enjoy the new view. Overall, near-field listening with occasional 'phones has been very good. On a bright note, we just got a zoning board approval for an addition. Hope springs eternal  .

Congrats! Small systems may deliver huge enjoyable sound. Though I presently have what I guess would considered a large system, I’m working on gathering together much more economical components for a smaller system. It will be tube based instead of solid state. In the end I’m expecting both to be enjoyable.

Absolutely. Very nice.
 Every time I've "gone big" (like at the moment with Maggies), I always end up back with 2-way stand mount speakers. There is just a bit of magic in their presentation & SQ that larger speakers cannot give me on a long-term basis. Obviously, YMMV.

Small systems can be amazing, and I’d have no problem living with a small system for that view. Where are you, somewhere on the cape or north shore?

Beautiful setup. Spectacular view.
Agreed on the "very good" that can be coaxed out of small systems. My main one here is a tight-fit nearfield setup (6' equilateral triangle) in a small bedroom furnished as such. Despite its spatial and configuration limitations, it still elicits "magic". Good luck and best wishes on the prospective addition.

Nice place and nice system.
The units of a HiFi-system can change during life due to circumstances at the moment. Small kids around is a significant factor. I had to build a fence around my stereo back then. This was after a brooken tweeter due to small curious fingers, one speaker falling on it's side and my son got stuck in the VHS-player. Bookshelf speakers have many advantages and characteristics that is hard to get in floor standing big speakers. Listen to music is important through out the hole life and your kid or kids will learn to love music as he/she probably will hear you play. Both my grown up son and daughter loves music and has a special interest in the music they heard as they were small. By playing music as a normal everyday thing, they will probably develop a love and understanding of music. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for the comments. I would like to say that is child number 1 but it is grandchild #1. Lots of goodies in the system (seen and unseen) care of Ivan/Legend Audio.
Apexorca - agree fully. We have always had some reasonable system even from when the kids were born. Yamaha and Boston Acoustics back then. Good memories.
