Dazngad interesting comparison. Before getting my VTL's I highly considered going with some Pass gear such as the X350. Do you notice any difference in bass control between the two?

I would love to see what the 750's are like. My 300's are hot enough for me so I could see how the 750's would just be killer in the Aruba weather.

The X series is for me very different in sound from the XA100.5S. I never owned them but in the systems I heard them it was always more of a SS characterized sound. The VTL 750s have incredible bass but it is probably the best Tube character bass there is. Slightly bloated and warm. So slightly. The Pass is warm but leaner. There are I am sure better amps for bass but at the expense of midrange. Overall speaker matching is critical for any amp but the VTL 750s are extremely versatile and for me only the newer VTLs are better. And that doesn't apply to all the newer VTLs. The Pass is so good that the VTL 750s are barely missed and in some areas bettered.

I have the VTL ST-85 El34 based tube AMP, what I like is the tank like build quality, hand wired, made in USA, cost is very competitive. The individual bias pots have lots of range so I have no problem running different vintage tubes no need for matching or high testing tubes. Pent/ tri switch option, The down side, fuses are pricey, only 8 ohm speaker connections and no balanced inputs.

I never heard VTL but from what I was told, they sound very close to Manley labs : as you know, they are "sisters" companies.
My Manley Snappers EL34 mono blocks sound wonderful to the point that some of my friends prefer them over the 2301's. Not my case though.
VTL seems to be a partnering made in heaven with Wilson speakers, according to Peter McGrath and some people who heard those combos.
IMHO, only VERY musical amps give truly wonderful results with Wilson.
All this to say that although I never heard them, I think that you just cannot go wrong with either VTL or Manley.

Can someone recommend a VTL dealer in Northern CA, around Sacramento or SF? If not, how about a good online dealer? I wrote to VTL about dealers, but they haven't responded yet.

Another question: How hot does the ST 150 get? Mine would have to be in an audio cabinet, but the doors have screens and the rear is open. Is that enough ventilation?

Try Music Lovers in San Francisco or Berkley.
