Denon 103R vs. AT-OC9/MLII
Any thoughts on preferences between the above two cartridges? I am listening mostly to Jazz and Vocal Jazz music.
Thanks |

I'm in the Denon camp on this one. A little warmer sound with the Denon than the AT

I second the Denon. Have had both and way prefered the sound of the 103R.
All I can say is it was more organic, with more meat on it's bones, (no I am not a butcher). The sound of the AT OC/9 FL was brighter. I own several head shells of different weights and still couldn't tame the high frequency's of the AT. |

I own the OC9 and two denon 103r's
Frankly, they are both overachievers. If the 0C9 sounds bright in your system, your system is bright. Overal IMO, the OC9 has superior treble and extension. Like anything, it is a balancing act. The denon 103 ro has superior prat and musical drive, however it all comes down to the tonal signature of your system. |

Thank you for the knowledgable feedback. I currently own a Denon 103R and love it. While we are on the topic, what cartridge do you feel would be a good step up form the Denon? I thought I would give the OC9 a try but based on your feedback I feel they are in the same league.
Thanks |

Hmmmm. If you prefer the slightly warmer sound of the Denon (I do too), I'd take a peek at the Shelter 501 II.. The Lyra Dorian or Argo i are both not bad either.

What would these cartridges offer over the Denon?

I just posted in the cart. forum. I purchased a slightly used Denon DL-103D. It is higher compliant and tracks at 1.5gm instead of 2.5. The stylus is elliptical vs. conical. Those two always worried me as far as record wear. The 103D's bass goes deeper and the mid-range and highs are less prominent than the 103R. After listening to the 103D the 103R sounds less natural.

More resolution and better tracking ability.

I would spend a couple of extra bucks and go for a Zu Denon 103. You won't be disappointed!
