Default More BDP-1 Questions

A few more questions about the fabulous BDP-1 (which I love to death!):
  • Leave it on all the time, or turn it off after each use? Leave the external HDDs connected when not in use?
  • What exactly is a scratch drive? Can there be more than one? Once designated a scratch drive, do I have to redesignate it if I turn on the BDP-1 after it's been turned off, or if I remove the drive and then reconnect it to the BDP-1?
  • As far as the external HDD goes (a 1TB WD My Passport), how full should I fill it before starting on a second one, and does it ever need to be defragmented?
Thanks!

I leave mine on all the time, with USB's connected.

Hi Sandman,

1. You have the option - it does not matter performance wise to leave it on or turn it off. Leave the drives attached as it will have to reload them if you start it up and forget to attached the drive.

2. The scratch drive just allows more storage for album art - not really required with the new software. You assign it to a specific drive and it will remember that.

3.No defrag required and I would leave about 10% of free space.

james

PS - glad you are enjoying the BDP-1

I leave mine on all the time with hdd attached. I made my scratch drive the same as my music drive. Using a ssd presently and only have 2 GB left of free space out of 224 GB. I have not experienced any problems, but yes it's time for a new larger hdd.

Wondering if anyone has a issue with their BDP-1 loading the HDD after reconnecting it. I usually have to reboot the player to get it to recognize the drive.

Are you swapping HDDs while the BDP is on?

I've never had a problem with mine seeing the external drive. I have noticed that it sometimes takes a few "refresh local cache" presses to get newer transfers/loads to appear in MPod/MPad.

Yes, I usually attach the drive with power on and it's a hit and miss affair whether the BDP-1 will load the music. Is it recommended to power off the player before attaching drive? I'm using a WD Passport 500MB.

I'm positive James will jump in but I'm pretty sure you will need to press the "update library" and "refresh local cache" before a newly drive attached is recognized - and sometimes you have to do it multiple times.

My suggestion is to leave your drive constantly attached unless you're doing a massive file transfer where you need the external drive attached to another computer. File transfers via network work well enough IMO. A reboot is only 20-30 secs so even doing that has never really been a problem for me.

Hi Folks,

Yes you must 'UPDATE MUSIC DATA BASE' found under 'SETTNGS - DRIVE INFO' for the BDP_1 to 'see' the new files OR restart the BDP-1. The best way to understand the BDP-1 is it 'REMEMBERS' the attached drives and files when you turn it 'OFF'. So after a restart all should be there.

Hope this helps.

james
