Heard yg vantage; was also very good but might go overboard Budget wise. Audio solutions virtuoso i also heard and compared with The magico a5. A5 is much better to my ears. My dealer whom i trust is persuading me to the tad et1x, he Knows my taste and according to him is much better than Magico a5 which he also carries but again more expensive. |

Many of these speakers I've never heard and not sure if there many dealers in my area that carry these other brands. I've heard the B&W 800 D3's and Magico A5. I've always been a B&W sound of guy, the A5's sounded better all around to me. I see the B&W 801 D4's are getting good reviews. Although, from what I've read, the A5's bettered the 800 D3's. so wondering if the 801 D4 is now closer to the A5. But look at the costs! To get the B&W 801 D4's and the center channel is much more pricey compared to the Magico's. |

I have heard both but in different locations and times. I really liked the S5 except the lower reads and Euphonium and cello weren't quite right with SS amps. Even a Mac 2301 still didn't work for me but little MC 275 IV was the perfect match though the highs were a little suppressed. The A5 sounded great with SS amps I thought. With a S5 using SS and if you using a smaller space I wouldn't hesitate to use the A5 for larger space and the right amps maybe a a pair of 275 in mono the S5 would be my choice. Or you might like the older Mac SS amps with autoformers. Both speakers are very sensitive to room placement so that might make for more of a difference in sound than changing amps. I made the dealers move the speakers a bit to get warmer sounds in both cases. I was listening at 12 watt levels at 12 ft distance in both cases, Yes there were some 50 to 60 watt peaks, but that didn't bother the 275 which could put out close to 95 watts before clipping. I love Magico tweeters. They are the only dome tweeters that are metallic that I can tolerate.

Your listening comparisons make sense to me after seeing how the a5 tweeter rolls off. There’s not a lot of musical content around 10khz but it would probably result in less air or detail as you heard. The midrange looks amazing. Can you get a home demo of each? It’s not chump change and your listening room will probably make the decision easier.

Hi, so you may prefer the S5 in a smaller space, but A5 in a larger space? Or does it come down to the amplifier preference to drive the S5?
