(MCD600 or MCD550) Using as a pre + MC275VI
Curious if anyone is using their Mc MCD as a pre with a MC275VI.
Any issues? Sound quality? Thx

I tried my MCD550 directly in my MC1201. I did not like it to be honest. It only sounded right on one position of the volume on the MCD550. Go any lower or higher and the music start falling apart. With a pre amp in the system...I am really satisfied

@4music...…………
I have heard exactly what you are saying, many times. I also have found putting a CD player straight into an amp, (McIntosh or another brand) always seemed to sound great for the first minute or so, then I had to constantly play with the volume control on the CD player to get an acceptable sound. IMHO. there is nothing like using a tube preamp into a solid state power amp. It's the best of both worlds! |

Back in the 90s I bought a Proceed CDP with a volume control that operated in the analog domain driving my Levinson No. 331 via XLRs. It was superb, and several reviewers preferred it to the equivalent Proceed amp. Used it for many years until the Proceed's transport gave up the ghost. That said, I don't think this experience is typical either then or now.

Let's say we compare the output impedance of the MCD550 with say the C2600 preamplifier:
MCD550 - 600 Ohms balanced / unbalanced C2600 - 200 Ohms balanced / 100 Ohms unbalanced Now let's look at the input impedance of the MC275 VI - 47 kOhms unbalanced, 20 kOhms balanced. Let's compare via balanced connections, since I would think that to be most common with this kind of gear. MCD550 - 20,000 / 600 = 33.33:1 C2600 - 20,000 / 200 = 100:1 [Obviously, you don't even have to know the input impedance of the power amplifier to know the C2600 is 3x better in regard (600/200).] Ideally, a 10:1 ratio is the minimum, and both easily achieve this. So, if one preferred the sound of the MCD550 through the C2600 as opposed to the MCD550 driving the amplifier directly, one would have to assume the preamp added some sort of coloration. However, it has been my experience that Mc preamps are pretty darned neutral. So, what kind of preamps did you guys use? Goes without saying that the preamp adds utility. |

Sound quality suffered dramatically IMO. At the time I owned pair of MC275’s Custom Made in Gold.

Wow - that looks to be quite a Machine there! I wonder why the designers elected to invert phase.

I think to so they keep it simple. I am not technical, but bringing back the polarity to normal would add one more stage.
