Default Master Bath Re-Tile & Refurbishment

Having been in the same house for nearly 23 years (Oct 31st is our closing anniversary), it was time to plan for a complete master bath re-tile/refurbishment of the blah blah white tile and god awful gold trimmed shower header/supports and hardware (fixtures).

My problem is in the last number of years it has been hard to find competent professionals. In fact, my builder who I recently had lunch with told me exactly the same thing. He, over these past 23 years is now building $600K homes and cannot find quality tile fitters (BTW, I don't live in a $600K home -- I do catch raccoons in my traps & cart them off & release them in the $600K neighborhoods though).

Anyways, found some tile pros who my neighbor knew & worked with in Idaho & who relocated out this way to start a business on their own. He swore by them and needless to say they came highly recommended.

I like to see new hardworking startups succeed and so after a meet and quote, the job was cemented & with signatures & a commence date selected.

Starting on Monday & part of Tuesday decoming the entire master bath. Hauling of tile and grout/backing down the stairs and into their truck - had to have made 50 trips it seems. Tile & cured grout is dog gone heavy. I arranged to donate the vanity, 2 vanity lights, 2 faucet fixtures, and a recently rebuilt toilet to Habitat For Humanity (pickup this Friday).

Wednesday I gave them the okay to pursue an opportunity for a commercial quote 185 miles away. Thursday they started the shower basin rebuild, and as the project neared an end, they completed everything agreed upon & drove off at 10:05PM on Saturday.

The crew were 3 -- all brothers. They work together, live together, eat together & were awesome beyond means. I bonded with them and as they were about to drive off, I gave them a $1K tip -- $300 each and with the remaining hundred, told them to have a meal on me. I was so impressed & wish them the best as they get situated in this area.

Sunday, the wife and I cleaned the entire house -- grout dust, no matter how careful, like drywall sanding particles go EVERYWHERE. I completely sealed the audio area & covered the rack with painters tarps & plastic.

The wife and I hung the separate mirrors and I removed & installed the new vanity lights & installed LED 100 watt equivalent bulbs that will, so the writing on the box says, 22 years.

Yesterday, the glass guy (43 years experience) came out and measured for a seamless shower. Since I have double odd angles where the shower door will be, the shower will need a satin nickel header for support. No fighting it -- the glass has to be stationary and if you will rugged to withstand shower door openings for the next 23 years.

My wife, an art major picked out the tile and accent piece in 5 minutes at the tile distributors store front. As we walked in and surveyed the store, I went one way and she another -- she knew what she wanted....I was clueless. I am more at home in the big box hardware stores & this was far from one.

The vanity and hardware were ordered off the web from Wayfair and everything came within 10 days (hardware only took 4-5 days -- vanity because at 365 pounds was trucked). That was a lot of fun getting it up the steps.

So, we wait the 10 business days for the shower glass & project can be noted as complete. The blue tape pieces highlight the location(s) of the shower door and overall height of the glass (78 inches high -- ihe glass satin nickel header must NOT visually interfere with the accent piece as one walks into the area).

Best Sirs,

Bob

They did an awesome job and have a great work ethic -- and worked so well amongst themselves. Just focused.

My builder friend wants to see the end result and schedule a meeting w/them.

Best Sir,

Bob

Thank you guys & to Dan for exploding the photo out -- last night right after I posted this thread, the internet went down & remained down -- nationwide issue with AT&T -- until 9:30am. So, I could not get back to AA and straighten out my attachments.

The wife and I are very happy with the whole affair -- just want to use it now. Turned out better than I expected -- I had high hopes, but it is quite a transformation. My realtor lady thought it was awesome.

Anyways, what you don't see & I had them incorporate it -- is an access door for the garden tub hardware/water lines & another to the far right of the tub -- access to the motor.

They drilled 4 holes at each corner section & secured with Philips head screws. Grouting over the heads (I was going to put Philips head caps on -- in a semi matching color, but the grout worked the best).

If I need access to those areas, drill out the grout covering the Philips headed screws, carefully, and then reverse the screws out. Use a utility knife to etch around the tile to loosen it for removal.

Put it back on and fill any areas & screw heads with matching MAPEI Navajo Brown silconized acrylic caulk.

Done deal.

Best Sirs,

Bob

Thank-you Doug & Dave -- Delta Lahara Series (I looked at Moen but their garden tub hardware didn't have the 11 inch reach we needed in the style we liked).

Best Sirs,

Bob

One other nice touch was incorporating an ebbe drain solution for the shower basin.

These are pretty cool -- has a hair trap under the cover that is accessed by using their supplied puller.

Bob
