thanks Stephen
I confess I am very lucky..... for the third consecutive year this deck is upgraded / tuned by Peter Swain of Cymbiosis UK aka the LP12 whisperer, one of the best world LINN LP12 specialist ....to see him in action at home is really fantastic, nobody in my country holds this level of expertise.... Peter Swain is for the LP12 what Bill Peugh is for Sonus Faber....

Just picked up a Well Tempered Simplex. Had a Rega Elys 2 cartridge all ready for it but the suspension went bad shortly after I installed it. It's been having some problems since I owned it but the new table made those problems more obvious. So now installed an Ortofon OM5E that I took off the Rega RP1 that I'm selling. Very poor cartridge (IMO). Ordered a Nagaoka MP 110 as a stop gap until I round up the funds for something nicer.

Hi Art
can recommend a Dyna cart for the Simplex - had a 20x2H and now have an xx2: both magic. Congrat's - they are fun! did you slop the silicone when putting it in?

Nice TT Art !
BTW, the Exact does not break the bank and sounds excellent imho. Much better than the Elys. Sent from my iPad using A.Aficionado

StereoTimes -- The Rega Exact Phono Cartridge most notably the following..... The 3-point mounting eliminates fore and aft movement of the cartridge in the headshell, thus placing overhang and tangency alignment on the accuracy of the arm pillar mounting hole distance. When set-up on a Rega table or with an armhole the same distance, the 2-null alignment of my 3 protractors shows the stylus overhang seriously short of ideal, though it is centered with Rega's supplied protractor. Rega holds that there is no ONE perfect and correct alignment set-up for pivoted arms: all are compromises with various trade-offs. I personally have been using the 2-null alignment (combining stylus to arm pivot-point distance, headshell offset, and 2 zero-distortion null points) for 25 years and have seen nothing to contradict this procedure. Hence, Rega's alignment immediately struck me as fishy. Auditioning the cartridge on a Rega P25 aligned according to the Rega protractor showed no obvious anomalies that I could unequivocally trace to overhang error. Removing the third mounting bolt to allow use of the 2-null alignment introduced 2 variables into the test and so rendered it meaningless. There was a noted diminution of tightness and dynamics when the 3rd mounting bolt was not used. I used the conventional 2-null alignment and 3-bolt attachment on all my test arms and tables (these allowed moving the arm hole slightly.) |
