Actually, I can find no socioeconomic exemptions in the law. Everyone is prohibited from unauthorized file sharing. You can find quite a few examples of people who have been (successfully) prosecuted for doing it.
The problem is that the legalities do apply here. You are asking others (Ivan specifically) to take a large risk in order to save a few dollars on music. I really doubt that he wants to take on the RIAA. Other than that, it is a good idea. I have personally bought quite a few CDs based on hearing a sample of the music. However, that argument doesn't seem to carry any weight with those who are deciding the cases.
