Congrats! Nothing wrong w/the MX series (I started with a MX135) but just too big considering how many features won't be used in a 2 channel setup. I think you made the right choice. Let us know what you think after you get some time w/it.

Nice
Just as Maks wrote, there's absolutely nothing wrong with Mac MX units for your stated intention. You stated that you want good gear for stereo listening, so, be it a Mac MX XXX unit or a Mac C XX preamp, you're getting equipment that can deliver what you're looking for.
Never let anyone tell you differently. I've been listening to Mac gear since the 70s and the only time I've been compelled to "upgrade" is when we wanted to move into newer functionality. As we wanted to add more channels, for example, we began looking (and buying) MX units that gave us that option. We purchased the MX 151, our newest Mac AVP, because we wanted the Room Perfect function for an odd multichannel listening space...but, if I wanted to go back to strictly 2-channels again, our MX 130 would do the job just as well as anything else we've ever owned. Also as Maks wrote, do let us know how things go with your new Mac C 28. It looks like a wonderful stereo preamp.

I picked up the C28 and have put it in place of the Linn Majik-1. I will need to use the amp side of the Majik-1 until I can find (and afford) a decent power amp. So far I am loving it. Sound great and no issues other than one light burned out. I will be taking in to the shop (the one that did the work) and have them put a new bulb in (at no charge). I would do it myself, but the thought that I might damage the face plate scares me a little. I am still on the fence as to an amp. I tried a newer Marantz amp (want to be able to stream music) on my Linn 5140 speakers that I have in the family room and they sound absolutely crappy, so went back to my Linn Classik there. Given this I am kind of thinking of putting a Linn amp behind the C28 that is feeding a pair of Linn Keilidh's, but not totally decided yet. It would definitely be the cheaper solution.

rj, absolute congrats on the C28. It was the premier Mac pre for a long time, though I never owned one. It's been a long time since I thought about preamp compatibility with a power amp but be sure you don't have an impedance mismatch. I'm sure the C28 has the current to drive the Linn Majik 1, otherwise it can affect the frequency response and overall performance of the amp.

Well I got it all hooked up. Mac Mini -> Schiit Modi & Thorens TD160 -> C28 -> Linn Majik (power amp side only) -> Linn Keilidh's. It sounds fantastic.

The Pride of Binghamton
Quote:
You know, I was watching a YT video recently that was produced by a wealthy Mac owner. He kept pushing a distinction between "old McIntosh" and "modern McIntosh"...and that had me scratching my head, quite frankly. If he imagines that there's a difference between the two, he's obviously owned Mac gear for a long time...right? I've been listening to Binghamton's best since the 70s, and it's always sounded the same to me: it's always sounded great. In fact, I can't recall any Mac system that didn't leave me smiling.

Well I picked up a first generation MC7150 (narrow chassis). Unit is near perfect. No issues at all with glass, and all bulbs replaced with LEDs. Sounds great.
I did find a good deal on an MX130, which was my first choice, but initially I couldn't find one in my price range. Well as it seems to always happen, I get impatient and buy something. In this case the C28, which is great. But I decided to get the MX130 so now I need to sell my C28. The MX130 is suppose to be here on Tuesday. Can't wait. |
