Jim,
I'm glad you pulled the trigger! That's an awesome projector. I was watching Skyfall in my JVC last night thinking that the in-off contrast ratio could be higher. Very tempting indeed.

On another note, it looks like your new exhaust fan could power a jet! Yikes, it's a biggun! Have the installer make at least two 360 degree loops in the ducting - it makes a huge difference in the noise. If that is still too loud, a simple vane axial duct booster will get you 200 cfm, which is probably all you'll need. Also, if you can mount the fan on rubber mounts or something else like that it will keep mechanical noise from traveling back into the room. I suspended mine on elastic bungee cords.

Congrats!

Tom

Tom,

Thanks for the insight on the exhaust fan. We will change out the ducting first, and if I still hear the fan then I will incorporate some of your suggestions.

We have not seen Skyfall and it is sitting on our shelf patiently waiting for the new projector to be up and working. It will be the first movie that we watch on the Sony! Can not wait...

Thanks again for your nice comments...

Jim

-- Also Jim, check 'Life of Pi', on Blu-ray, and in 3D, with your new Sony front projector. /// It'll blow you away, radically!

Tom,

Thanks for asking... the videophiles are somewhat limited here.... and I appreciate you asking...

I have been busy. I had to reconstruct the projector box as it was originally designed for the smaller projector. It needed custom steel rails that had to be made twice as the first ones that were made of 1/8" steel thickness could not hold up this 44 lb. projector with out sagging. So the local steel shop here had to remake them to be 3/8" thick which had me throw $100.00 out the window on the first ones.

Then I had to cut new holes for the lens opening in the projector box. We also had to make a new trap door with air intakes to correlate with the Sony projector air intakes, trim it out and stain /poly it. Also had to have the Magnolia rep reprogram my MX-980 remote for the new Oppo and Sony and the new exhaust fan install for the projector box...

But that is not what you asked about. When it comes to picture quality there is a huge visible difference. However we have to remember that even though I have seen high end projectors at others HTs I am mostly comparing it to my Panasonic AE4000 that had 905 hours on the bulb. It was also a projector with an MSRP about $2500.00 compared to $25K so it is not really comparing apples to apples....

The picture on this Sony VPL-VW1000ES is simply amazing!

It is like my video has just come to life after being in a some what subdued / coma state. The colors just pop off the screen. They are rich and vibrant and draw you in like ice cream does for a kid with a sweet tooth. Skin tones look more natural and believable. Because there is so much more light with this Sony I am noticing more depth in the scene between foreground and background. The blacks are blacker and there is a richness and clarity that is just breathtaking.

I was happy with my Panny and it will always be a good bang for the buck projector. But this Sony has taken my HT to another level. I have always said that my video was never on the same playing field as my audio, but by adding this new Sony projector I have obtained, after many years, my final destination / goal for our HT.

Down the road I will look for a DAC and MacMini to help with my two channel listening. But for the most part until new technolgy makes my HT obsolete I am at a state of Nirvana and have no need to take it any farther.

My wife has noticed and commented on all of the things I described above. But after she got done complimenting the great picture she said but you have to ask yourself is it worth the difference in price between the two?

Well is a 2 million dollar plus Bugatti that much better then a 300K Ferrari? I guess it just depends on who you are asking.

Cheers,

Box under make over. Trim work on lens opening was stained last thursday. You can see the steel rails, temp probe that comes on at 85 degrees for the new exhaust fan, and the L brackets that I bought from Home Depot.

The new trap door with the new air inlets for cooling...

Jim... Being an Avid Videophile myself, I can easily justify the cost difference and all the improvements you mentioned; Congrad's!
