Default Greetings from St. Louis

Hello

I'm a long time music lover since acquiring my first Marantz and Dual gear back in the early 70s. I have a degree in musicology (medieval/renaissance and jazz studies), but work as a software engineer. I am also very much a car guy and fan of sports car and F1 racing.

I am 99% a vinylphile. The digital domain has just never impressed nor excited me, so I don't listen to it much, other than casually. I have a collection of some 2200+ LPs, about 1/3 jazz and 2/3 classical. In the distant past I went through Marantz and McIntosh gear until I settled on Naim Audio and Arcam. My current gear is as follows:

Two channel music system
Rega RP3 turntable w/ Groovetracer Reference Subplatter & counterwight upgrades
Rega TTPSU
Dynavector 20x2H phono cartridge
Simaudio Moon 110 LP phono preamp w/Welborne Labs PSU
KAB RF1 phono subsonic filter
Naim Audio UnitiQute preamp/digital frontend
Naim Audio NAP250.2 poweramp
Dynaudio Contour S1.4 Maple speakers
Dynaudio Black Stand4
REL Serie T-7 sub
Naim Audio speaker cable, Transparent Audio interconnects

Home Theater 7.1 system
Arcam AVR300
Dynaudio Audience 72 (F)
Dynaudio Audience 122C (C)
Dynaudio Audience 52SE (S)
Dynaudio Audience 62 (R)
Dynaudio Sub 500

Thanks for looking...

Dean

M5, huh? I had an 05 M3. My favorite car so far. Since then I've had a MINI John Cooper Works, and I just got a Subaru WRX STi a month ago.

We have our hotel for Austin later this year. Can't wait.

I'm in!

You have a serious record collection there. What do you use to catalog it? I'm on a Mac and have been using CollectorZ Music Collector, but it's not Mac-like, very modal, and pretty flakey, so I'm looking.

Welcome to AA RaceTripper

You will find several individuals in the Classical Thread who share your passion and help those of us less inclined to find discs that get us going.

I really like Music Collector and have used for years on Mac's, not sure what you find flakey with it.

Jim

List management for one. Lists have a life of their own, adding duplicates for no good reason. Whenever I add records I end up with garbage data. Here's an example. I have a bunch of Hank Mobley records, with "Hank Mobley" spelled correctly and no extras spaces, etc. I just added a new Hank Mobley album via search. It's spelled exactly the same way, but Music Collector adds another artist entry. Now the artists list has two Hank Mobley items and I have to merge them. That kind of poor data management happens all over the app. Also, you can't cut and paste. So if I get a new record of a work I have already, I have to retype all the info I added for the first, like the tracks, movements, etc. Everything in the app is crowded, non-resizable modal dialogs. It's one of the worst UIs I've seen on the Mac. When I complain to CollectorZ about the problems, they just get defensive about it and don't really listen to what I -- as a user -- need for this app. Usability is a big issue for me, and I've been in the software business a long time.

I hate this app, but it's about the only one with a data model that is reasonable for any music that isn't pop. It's a bad Windows port to the Mac.
