Solar Eclipse
I managed to grab a few shots of the eclipse using a Nikon D300 with a 300 F2.8 lens covered with a double film of X-ray film! I had no prior idea how to take eclipse photos so was just happy to see something come out!

Pretty cool. Hey didn't your parents tell you not to look at the sun? Jim |

I've seen this trick before; done with a 60 watt bulb & a quarter.
Very nice shots!

Howie: BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE SUN THROUGH YOUR CAMERA- SPECIAL FILTERS ARE REQUIRED TO PROTECT YOUR EYES!!!!
Anyone that's interested in photographing the sun should get educated first on the particulars before attempting to do so. Here's a link to Baader Planetarium- http://www.alpineastro.com/Solar_Obs...bservation.htm I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU ACQUIRE THEIR SOLAR FILM FOR YOUR NEXT PHOTO SHOOT. YOU MIGHT WANT TO GET YOUR EYES CHECKED FOR ANY POTENTIAL DAMAGE/CORNEAL & RETINAL BURNS. For those that don't already know, I have a hobby of solar astronomy. I use a Baader Herschel Wedge Prisma(prism) for white light observations and photography. I also have several professional grade sub-angstrom solar filters from DayStar Filters:DayStar Filters - Ultra narrow Bandpass filters Anyone interested in doing solar photography or observations can PM me for details. Eye protection is of the utmost importance when doing this fun and exciting hobby. BTW Howie: did you get any shots of the sun's corona as well. Once the moon has has completely occluded the sun, the corona/chromosphere becomes visible and can be viewed safely with no eye protection. The corona is in the millions of degrees vs. the surface of the sun which has a average temp of around 10,000 degrees F. Last edited by gregswaim; 07-25-2009 at 11:32 AM. |

Our eclipse here was only 75% so no corona . I have to wait 900 years for a full eclipse! howie |

Check out the Baader link that I've provided. The Baader Solar Safety Film does protect your vision in order to observe the sun without all of the associated radiation. There are 2 types of Baader film: For Visual Observation and another type for Photographic purposes. You can purchase the appropriate size cell to fit the aperture of your lens. You can place a order directly with Baader. You can also order just the film and make your own cell- instructions are provided from their website. Last edited by gregswaim; 07-26-2009 at 01:26 AM. |
